Digitally controlled gain - compatible interfaces or pres-only

Post by cupakm »

Hi all,

I'm looking for compatible interfaces (or mic pres) with digitally controlled gain. The reason is that I need perfectly repeatable sessions and I don't like having fun wiggling gain knobs, watching out for slight diffs each time.

As far as I know...

Interfaces:
RME FireFace 400 - FFADO supported
RME Babyface - CC mode
RME Babyface Pro - CC
RME FireFace UFX - all versions with CC
RME OctaMic XTC - CC

Uncertain whether these work:
Roland UA-1010 OctaCapture - some say it works at 44.1 kHz only

Pres:
Presonus DigiMax DP88 - ADAT
RME Micstasy - ADAT / MADI

Any suggestions?

I had in mind microphone preamplifier gain. For acoustic stereo recordings, mostly classical music. No leveling and certainly no compression or normalization. I just want to have the gain same each time and across all channels (mostly only 2 for stereo).

I know what you're talking about. DAW gain/trim can not substitute.

Unfortunately, I don't know enough about the various devices sold as audio interfaces. What I do know is that my Behringer XR18 mixer can do this. It may be overkill for your needs, but I've been using it as my primary USB interface ever since I got it. (Just to be clear, the XR12 and XR16 do not work as USB interfaces.) It even officially supported on Linux.
All in favor of Linux, say 'aye.'
