[solved] Focusrite Scarlett 18i8 1st gen, no sound.

Post by kujaw »

My first post here, hello :)

I'm a totally noob with Linux audio.

Focusrite 18i8 1st gen, no sound.

I've got Jack running with Cadence, PA & Jack are bridged, I try to play some music on Audacious.

Here is my connection graph:
Image

Audacious plays music, I can see in it's GUI. However I don't get any sound from interface.
Same with e.g. web browser, I can see in pavucontrol that music is played from web browser via Jack Sink.

I tried many connection changes in Jack (Catia), also plugged speakers to every output of the interface. Still nothing.

On Windows everything works out-of-the-box. It means that Focusrite's mixer is set correctly, I think. Or not...

Any help appreciated :)

This looks as if audacious outputs direktly to jackd.

Maybe it's not the first 2 outputs that you connected to your amp. Just try to connect audacious to all of the outputs.

I tried to run audiacious either via PulseAudio-Jack bridge and via Jack. Tried to connect audacious to all the outputs, I don't hear anything. It's just insane, everybody writes that their Scarletts run perfectly out of the box and I'm scratching my head what to do to make it work on Linux.

Just to be sure: Did you check volumes or if channels are muted in alsamixer?

I've just tried to set "Mix" and "DAW" in ScarlettMixer's Routing Preset on Windows, but on Linux nothing has changed.

Yes! It has been muted!
But why? I've never muted it.
Anyway, another lesson learnt.

The "internal mixer" on my 1st gen 18i8 resets to a "muted" state when it powers off. I wrote a Python script to dump and load the mixer config via a YAML file. It might be useful for your use case:

Does it also happen on Windows in your case?
I'm wondering of it's Focusrite issue or Linux (or Alsa) issue.

[edit]
E.g. if I set everything correct in Windows Scarlett Mixer, will the interface be unmuted every time I plug it to Linux machine?

I've used https://github.com/x42/scarlett-mixer and unmuted soundcard outputs.
Now everytime I connect Scartlett it is unmuted.
Solved again :)

They are rumored to be 2 generations old. Do both works under Linux?
Still saw Focusrite Scarlet Solo - who already tried it?
I use the first-generation scarlett 2i4. First time I plugged it in, JACK recognized audio and midi inputs and outputs, I was able to make music almost immediately, and I have had no trouble. I'm thinking of upgrading to 18i8.
