Hi, new user here =)

So, I have a UMC204HD, and I think it often work when in a live CD but after installation and updates, like currently in ZorinOS (Ubuntu fork) (or elementaryOS) I can't get sound from the main out.
The headphones work fine.
I've unmuted everything in Alsamixer and put the mixers to max.

I've tried a few distros for some reasons the past few days and my best guess is that the kernel update to 5.3 mess everything but i'm not a linux pro-user.

Also i want to stay away the most i can from jack. I'd prefer out-of-the-box things that work in some way or another.

And also same thing with my Roland SE02 synth that can work as an interface, it just make the audio engine of Bitwig crash. But it get sound out.

Sorry i'm a bit lost with all that but is there something i'm missing ?

Your title says 404HD, your post says 204HD. I have a 204HD, using it with Arch Linux, all works great.

How do you have the outputs from the back connected to your computer?

Edit: My bad, it's an existing thread, re the title

If you need 5.3 then install 'linux-lowlatency-hwe-18.04-edge'.

Edit, oh wait, you're saying that before 5.3 it was fine?

I didn't want to make a whole thread for a little bug, so i just jumped into a closely related and general one.

It's connected via the two 6,35mm mono jack and into a 3,5mm stereo on my speakers.
And USB to my computer.

BUT as i looked... the jacks are connected on the inserts >_<
How %$&§£ am i... You know... it's dark behind my computer.

Allright, thanks for the obvious but necessary question. I'll connect the right jacks, it should work.

EDIT : It work. I tried so many things, never occured to me i could have messed something as simple as this at some point.

My mistake, I thought it was a new thread.

Glad you sorted it. I really like this little box!

Hello all,

Audio interface newbie here! I 'd like to ask the following questions regarding this Behringer unit

1. When used as a plain USB sound card (eg, YouTube, media player, etc) does the USB send audio to the main outputs as well as headphones? Follow up questions for this scenario:
1a. WIll the audio coming from USB get mixed with the 1-4 inputs when the mix knob is set all the way to the left (IN position)?
1b. Have you experienced any issues with the sound (when switching from the onboard sound card of your PC to the audio interface) getting either high or low pitched (as if you play vinyl records in higher or slower speeds)*
3. When powered on does ALSA/alsamixer remember the volume levels for each input/output channel from the last time it was used? **
4. Can it work on its own without turning on my PC (standalone mode, for example just hooking up the speaker cabinet simulation output that my guitar amp attenuator has for silent practising).

FYI, I 'm on KDE Neon (Ubuntu LTS based distribution) using Pulseaudio. Thanks for any response :)

* I get this behaviour sometimes with a Scarlett 18i8 1st Gen with or without JACK being involved
** With the Scarlett 18i8 1st Gen this is not the case, but I can workaround it with alsactl

I have the 204HD, presumably identical apart from the number of inputs.

1a. What do you mean by "the audio coming from USB"? Manual: "adjusts the level of input signal to play back".

1b. No. In fact I've just disabled the onboard Intel sound anyway, as it was superfluous to my needs.

3. Yes.

4. Not tried that but I would think "yes". EDIT: I just tried this and whilst the input signal is registering, there is no headphone output.

No DE here, running Jack (ALSA). I have never used Pulseaudio.

What @turbidh20 said and:

4. No matter what you do you need power from the power brick or USB. I don't understand exactly what you want to do but it won't work fine as a (passive) mixer I think (never tried it).

And realize that the the thing will NOT work as a 4 in and 4 out device without using Jack Audio. Jack sometimes functions well with Pulseaudio activated, sometimes it don't. So if you do not wat to use Jack you're out of luck...

Thanks both for your answers.

@turbidh20

By mentioning "the audio coming from USB" I mean when you listen to YouTube using your browser, music from your preferred media player, etc. In my case I have a laptop which I often dock/undock. Can you set the Mix knob in between positions or is it only IN, 50/50, PB?

@Linuxmusician01

Right now I have a Scarlett 18i8 1st Gen. You can save it's internal routing/mixing in its memory using Focusrite’s software and use it as a mixer without connecting it to a PC. I appreciate that the UMC404HD has a default routing which you can’t change, but the question is can it be used without turning on my laptop, eg, just connect a source in one of its inputs (in this case guitar speaker cabinet simulation) and hear the audio from its main outputs and/or through heaphones?

Also, I know that for more complicated scenarios I need to use JACK, but I do not need that all the time, eg when I have my laptop docked just listening to music or silent practising.

The mix knob isn't an on/off. It ranges from "off" to "full on" and wherever you turn it to in between.

Sorry, I missed your question 1 originally! So... 1. All audio goes to all outputs. I have one out going to wireless headphones, one to another set of wired headphones and one to powered speakers and of course, the front headphone socket has my best Sennheiser headphones plugged in.

Thanks @turbidh20. I think I get the whole idea with the audio interfaces better now. I have the aforementioned Scarlett 18i8 1st Gen for a long time now, but never had the time to properly try it out while at the moment with all those lockdowns it’s easier.

I 've done a bit more testing today with some bash scripts that I 'm working on and looks better than I thought, although all the mixing/routing options which the Scarlet has still confuse the hell out of me (and imagine I 'm an IT/Linux engineer by profession :P)

I 'm not sure if I want to keep it though or go for the Behringer, either the UMC404HD or the bigger UMC1820. I don’t need all those inputs/outputs that the latter has, but the fact that the majority of the XLRs on that unit are on the rear panel makes things easier for my space. Having said that there is no availability at the moment in all the big UK/European music shops for most of the UMC audio interfaces.

Thanks very much all for the feedback you provided so far

Yep that works. I tested it. You do not need a computer. You can use the headphones out and the (hardware) phones volume knob for any of the 4 inputs. So the 404HD can function somewhat like an analoge mixer. :)

@Linuxmusician01 Thanks for checking. At the moment I 'm fine after all the work I did today tweaking my script, systemd and pulseaudio. They all seem to play nicely together with/without JACK. I just need a pair of small monitor speakers (I 'm leaning towards the Fluid Audio F5) and I 'll be sorted. I 'll be keeping an eye though on those Behringer interfaces and if I 'm not happy with the Scarlett I may give them a shot.

Thanks for all your help people! :D
