Is it possible to use a Wacom tablet as a MIDI controller?
This is the most relevant thing I've found but it doesn't seem to work.

I'm not opposed to using windoze software in Wine but anything I've come across is from the early-mid 2000s and the download links don't work or the page 404's.
Someone must be doing this...
I'm running Ubuntu Studio 14.04 and I'm trying to use a Wacom CTE-440.

If synclient shows the input data you might be able to use a little program I hacked together years ago (it was my first, so its a bit rough, but works for generating midi data from the touchpad of a laptop).

Let me know if it works or you have issues, I haven't used it myself for a long time.

Yes you can use a drawing tablet as a high-resolution pressure-sensitive XY controller with the appropriate adapter software. Did that for a while, fun to play around with fora while, but having to pick up the pen to use a MIDI controller feels a bit silly. Your milage may vary ofc.

Re: Wacom Tablets
I did this with a friend's Wacom years ago using Max/MSP on a Mac. The only fiddly part in Linux might be getting drivers configured . Then I'd use a toolbox environment such as Pure Data to make a Wacom MIDI translator patch - I'd be astonished if there wasn't already a Pd object for parsing Wacom input.
One idea I was toying with is that an older tablet with serial I/O could perhaps be converted into a standalone MIDI controller, with some work.
