What's a good Audio Interface for me?

Post by CeeJayTheFirst »

Hello fellow Linux Musicians.

I would like to have the opinion of the more experienced members on the subject of audio interfaces.
My budget ranges from 150 euro to 400 euro, but since the prices change according to the seller let me put it this way: My budget ranges from a Lexicon Omega to a Focusrite Saffire Pro 40.

What I want to do is as follows: I have a multi FX preamp (Digitech GSP1101), and I want to do a direct recording which means Guitar=»Preamp=»Audio Interface. (Future uses may require multiple inputs).
I am using ubuntu studio 14.04 LTS and would like to have a decent support on my possible interface of choice.

On this, what can you recommend me?

P.S. I like to keep my stuff in a rack.
P.P.S. I am more inclined towards the Focusrite Saffire Pro 40 or the Scarlett 18i20.

The Digitech GSP1101 has USB, theoretically it can go straight into your computer thereby negating the need for an extra soundcard to capture the signal. Monitoring can be done by the on-board audio, assuming that it works ok with jack.

Configuration examples: http://linuxmusicians.com/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=14859

If you need extra inputs then any sound cards listed on the ALSA compatibility pages to be working with Linux, or interfaces mentioned as working on this forum should be OK. Do a search. There is no official aka vendor support as far as I'm aware. USB Class compliant sound cards often work ok with Linux.

- Pro 40 is firewire - a dying standard, not the best choice with future-proofing in mind.
- 18i20 is expensive. Unless you really need 8 permanent inputs it's a pointless purchase when there are much cheaper and similar sounding 2 and 4 input cards available.
- To fit smaller width devices into a rack, a bracket usually works.

Komplete Audio 6 is a good linux choice, and someone on Black Friday/Cyber Monday
is bound to have it on special sale price, it includes Komplete Elements as a gateway drug of sorts,
and it's many componants work well in wineasio, and includes a $25 voucher, handy for
their excellent range of lower priced instruments and effects, like Razor and Prism.

+1 on the KA6. 'just works' here with a range of desktops, laptops and even an eeePC :)
