Guitar Re-Amping with Audio Interface (Scarlett 2i2, JamVox)

Post by joei666 »

Hey!

First of all I really like this forum! It has been my prime resource for information on linux recording for a couple of months now :D

Currently, I record my guitar and bass tracks with an old Behringer V-Amp 2 which uses analogous Line-In of my onboard sound card. The V-Amp has a lot of Amp and Speaker Emulation capabilities I love. However, sound quality is really bad because the signal is received through a crappy on-board soundcard.

Now, I plan to switch to an USB audio interface. In the forum, I found good reports about Linux compatibility and sound quality on Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 ( http://us.focusrite.com/usb-audio-inter ... ett-studio ). The price is good and 2 channels are enough for my purposes. However, when switching to Scarlett 2i2, I will lose the amp and speaker emulation capabilities of the V-Amp.

Question 1:
Is there any way to do (emulated) "Re-Amping" of my recorded guitar tracks with Scarlett 2i2 in conjunction with V-Amp?
The V-Amp does not support to be run as a plugin in DAWs. In principle, it should be possible to route my recorded guitar tracks through the V-Amp back to the DAW as a "re-amped" signal. I would use the Audio Interface for that purpose. Am I right? Are there any issues on latency, chattering etc.?

Question 2:
Did anyone successfully use VOX JamVox as an Audio Interface with Amp Simulation under Linux?
I know JamVox is a practice and session box for guitar players. It does not seem to be a real ("pure") Audio Interface. However, a friend of mine uses JamVox on Windows 8 as an Audio Interface and Re-Amping device via VST Plugins ( http://www.voxamps.de/nc/vox/jamvox-iii.html ). Unfortunately, he experienced latency and chatter problems with VOX ASIO driver.

Best,

Hi joei666,

While I can't provide a definitive answer to either of your questions, I suspect none of those will work on Linux.
So you'll probably save yourself some hassle by reviewing your signal chain and going as much as possible with a class compliant USB interface and native Linux applications.
Suggestion: get a decent soundcard (the 2i2 is ok, but I encourage you to read the other HW threads) and give http://guitarix.org/ a try.
It has progressed a lot over the last few months and can hold its own quite well compared to the commercial guitar amp simulators.

Another project you may be interested in is http://portalmod.com/home
The software part (https://github.com/moddevices/mod-app) can in theory run anywhere - although you probably won't get the benefits of the tight HW/SW integration.

Cheers,

Thanks gimeapill! I will have a look to find a better AI and also check out these re-amping / modulation solutions!

Fender Mustang usb amps act as audio input, via the usb and line connections.
No driver necessary. Mustangs come in newer V2 models, but the older
V1 models can use a software called 'plug', to edit all paramaters, and save
presets accessible from each amps main dial. Plug is found in debian repos.

Mustang Version 1 models include, I, II, III, IV, V, Floor, and Mini.

Version 2 models have improved firmware, and a few more models and effects, but the plug app
was not updated to use it.

A used Mustang I version1 can be found for $60 most days, a Mustang V version1 for $200. The main dial
on the I can access 24 presets, the V can access 100 presets,
The sound is excellent, 10 amp models, bias, sag, cab modeling, and some nice effects for pre and post amp modifications.
Mustangs plugged in by usb will show up as a hw: device in qjackctl, to be routed as desired.
A clean preset can be saved for use with software ampsims/effects, as desired.

There is still a lot of knob control on V2 amps, and Fender's Fuse software for mac/win
can be used to edit/create/save a batch of presets, if you can access a mac/win setup to install Fuse.
Cheers
