iLok License Manager in wine-staging/Reaper is working!

Post by glowrak guy »

I have a pair of AIR Music Tech plugin purchases working
in Mint 18, reaper, and wine-satging 4.6, Hybrid 3 and Vacuum.
They utilize pace copy protection and activation is achieved
using the lLok Licence Manager software. Thought by many
to never work in linux

AIR products were once Pro Tools only, but now also
run in win7 or newer, and OS X 10.8.5 or newer,
and now in linux. I've read a few reports over the past
two years that seemed credible, so I kept trying as new
versions of wine-staging were released. Here is what I did
to get the iLok License Manager going:

1. I renamed my existing .wine folder, and ran
winecfg which created a new one, and based on previous
wine successes, added the following dll over-rides:

mfc140
gdiplus
msxml3
d3d9
d3d10
d3d11

2. Created a bunch of folders replicating common paths
found in windows 7 setups, so the ilok installer would be happy.
3. Ran the ilok manager installer (which first installs BonJour
for networking)
Rebooted
4. Installed AIR's Hybrid 3, and Vacuum synths, granted the prompt that appeared
during installation the permission to 'repair' BonJour, which it supposedly did,
although it was probably a nuisance wine glitch triggering that prompt.
Rebooted
5. Started ilok-manager, and logged in to my account,
gave the manager the Hybrid 3 serial number,
and the gui reported the activation was complete.
Same steps for Vacuum.
6. Started Reaper, and twitched several times as
the 64 and 32 bit Hybrids and Vacuum were scanned
7. Chose Hybrid 3 on a new track, and grinned ear to ear
when the gui appeared in working order,
with the preset menu bursting at the seams.
Put Vacuum on a second track, and looking forward
to exploring the sounds.

A lot of AIR products are 'old', in marketing terms, and can be found
at no-brainer bargain prices, or in bundles. As plugin/instrument staples among
Pro Tools users, they've been heard in many recordings.
www.pluginboutique.com usually have some on sale,
and a huge bundle called the AIEP 3 upgrade is often
just $75 and provides a huge range of tools and instruments.
I have a few more yet to install, but it's looking good so far.
Cheers

Is the iLok necessary to run the demo versions ?

Thanks for sharing! I'm trying to get the license manager working, but I'm pretty sure I didn't do the last three overrides in your list, so I'll try that next. I'm getting a server unavailable message.

based on the above article from 2015, it looks like the eight product demos will need the
iLok software licenser...
" Each instrument uses PACE Eden authorization, eliminating the need for a physical iLok dongle,
and existing users of each instrument are eligible for a free update."

But it only takes a few minutes to try.

Did BonJour get installed OK? Thats the first thing that visually happened in my installer's routine.
And each application installer might then offer to repair or remove it, repair is of course the needed choice.

I used a previously aquired msxml3.dll for the over-ride, 130432 bytes, maybe a fresh one
would help?

in case someone needs to know, msoft .msi installers use command"

wine msiexec -i name-of.msi

Thanks. Bonjour is installed. msxml3 was installed using winetricks. Qt5svg.dll was missing, fixed that but still no joy...

I have been using a license manager v5.0.0_r43164, but today I allowed
the license manager to 'upgrade itself' to the latest version,
and the new version is NOT working, so I'll double back with a new wine folder,
and try to replicate the earlier success, and update this info. I think the ilok site has
a link to get older versions on the main download page.

Running the wine-staging's winecfg to start a new wine folder
prompted to install gecko and mono, which I did in the successful setup.
I'm going to keep using fresh empty wines for testing, because of possible
multiple .net versions in a more diverse install.

Cheers

FWIW, I did install my Soundtoys plugins in wine a few months ago. Initially I had no problems at all, but at some point it didn't find the licenses anymore. Maybe it was related to updating the wineprefix with a new wine version. Soundtoys were very understanding and gave me new licenses!

I'd urge a long testing period and some caution :)

I really ought to do some thorough testing of this, as I've gotten a lot of demo licenses from Soundtoys. Just been quite burnt out lately preferring other activities to messing with computers..

In any case, I'm certainly curious about new synth sounds BUT, I should stick to what I decided which is to learn well what I've already got for getting the most out of these tools. Recently I went through ElectraX with full details and it was really interesting to get to know and experiment to some length the capabilities of such a synth. And I just begun. And there are more synths awaiting the same exploration.

Hence, seeing that there can be some problems with this iLok thing makes it for me an auspicious sign (to paraphrase Peter Hammill)

Cheers.
