Buy a UNO synth, and choose a software title,
Amplitube 4, or Sampletank 4 SE might be best choices
since they should work in a modern linux/wine setup,
and host a lot of the other titles.
I've found IK Multimedia's UNO synth to be a great addition
to my audio setup, it doubles as an arpeggiator, step sequencer,
and extra audio input, I have a splitter cable on it's input jack,
so my guitar amp and rompler's drum machine are ready
for action. The UNO can save 80 presets, has usb midi,
and cables to connect 5pin din midi plugs.
When powered by usb, it's noisy, but it's not noisy
when powered by a standard usb phone-charger,
or used with four AA batteries.
A ground-loop killer as used for car stereos with 1/8 inch audio
jack is recommended to end the noise,

but some LED settings also eliminate about 80% of the usb noise,
so choosing an irrelevant setting is handy when you have the sound you want.
Youtube has many UNO, Amplitube 4, and SampleTank videos,
although SampleTank V4 was just released, so most videos will be for V3.
Cheers
