U-he linux port talk moves to Reddit

Post by glowrak guy »

https://www.reddit.com/r/UheOnLinux/

The discussion of U-he plugin linux ports has a new home,
at the link above, to simply things for the coder.
Recent fixes are rolling in for Repro, as a few system combinations
have had graphics glitches. The related kvr topic
is locked, but may still be referred to if desired.

Reddit is pokey about new members posting too often,
FOB syndrome, it seems, so if warned you're too fast on the trigger,
don't be surprised.
Cheers

Thank goodness for that, kvr forum is a pretty bad support platform.

Isn't the restriction one topic per minute? Been a while since I've posted with a new account but shouldn't be too bad to deal with.

Now u-he is visibly decoupled from Linux releases. Yesterday/today there were 2 new beta releases with no Linux mention whatsoever on KVR. And nothing by Alex who is certainly otherwise very busy. A sub-forum would have been nice, but I presume Urs said no. I do not see how Reddit is an improvement on the traditional forum style. The tree structure ? Maybe, if many topics are found inside a thread. Otherwise if topics are kept clean... I find the Bitwig KVR forum very useful. Questions are answered by members, everything runs smoothly.

It comes as a contrast for me since I wasn't there at the beginning. When I got to know about u-he and their Linux synths everything was already there. I had no idea that it could have been a struggle of some sort to have these Linux builds happening. So I thought cool, a company that produces high quality synths and cares for Linux. That made me forget totally about getting a side Windows machine for running Komplete and I got the u-he synths. And u-he gave me Filterscape. All cool. Then I got Bitwig. All set.

Now we see that putting out Linux releases is not easy at all and certainly not a priority for u-he. If Alex goes away, it's gone for all practical purposes until another 'volunteer' steps forward to work on these build and charge u-he from time to time.

The new browser certainly has brought more than its share of problems with the Linux builds and the added library, as can be seen by the many comments on libraries and such. Here on Linux Mint 18 (and before, 17) they all run fine although I'm kind of thinking that there could be a day where there'll be no more u-he Linux updates, meaning that this current OS version would probably be kept for making music. I do not mind so much as I still have a lot to learn about those synths, although I would not be surprised to see one day all the new u-he synths and features while still hammering on my vintage u-he synths. Hopefully running Bitwig and Mixbus32C on a vintage OS/setup will also work.

Hmmm... a bit too pessimistic all that.

Cheers.

Yep, that's how I see it from times to times. Historic. As in: tales from a distant past. :?

If you assemble the posts of the really fine coders,
who contributed their thoughts in the kvr topic, about the difficulties
and diversity of gui coding in linux, and the need for getting it 'right',
the enormity of the task, and the project's potential impact
on linux audio becomes more apparent. A rush-job
would be a disservice for all, so I'll happily use Repro 5 in wine/reaper,
and a solid linux-native Zebra 2.7, while these important
coding issues are worked out.

Abique has a bright future, whether or not at U-he.
Hopefully, he'll spend far more time in Berlin than was originally
planned for

A rush job in software is ALWAYS bad news down the road. I only did some Qt and wxWidgets-based stuff, but did a fair share of a variation in real-time programming, concurrent programming.

The thing with the situation is that the new browser brings in library changes with which many people have difficulties. I don't, really, for all pratical purposes. I did find what looks like a bug in Repro-5 though - will have to check it out.

Windows is not an option.

Alex is not a Berlin native ?
