Quick question, the kick drum on the DRS kit, what does contact and no contact mean?

It is sampling of two different playing styles. One where the kick-drum beater rests on the drum-head after the stroke and thereby dampens it and one where it doesn't, letting the drum head "ring" more.
I think most drummers use the "no contact" variant, but I imagine that some jazz musicians would prefer the "contact" one for some music pieces.
