Electronic Drums

Post by finotti »

I don't usually work on this kind of music, but I've been writing and recording music for (amateur) video games my son is making, and he wants "electronic music" for the background and theme. Some of the examples he's shown me are like 80's synth music, while some seem more modern.

I have no experience with electronic drums and lack the skills in sound design to make my own drum sounds. I've been simply using the electronic drums kit from FluidSynth's sf2, but I'd like more options.

Can you recommend some electronic drums samples/synths? (Some classic drum machines would be great, as well as more "modern" samples.)

Sitala is great for this, it comes with a couple of classic drum machine kits which should be perfect for what you need.

There are lots of samples around, here is a pack I found quickly - https://www.musicradar.com/news/sampler ... ne-samples

I think Hydrogen drumkits are what you are looking for.

If you don't mind giving your email, there is plenty of places offering free drum kits, for example

https://samplesfrommars.com/collections/free
https://slatedigital.com/free-sample-packs

They start sending you marketing mail, but they seem to honor unsubscribe, so you get rid of them.

I think than more than the samples itself, I think that there are two things you could use to make 80s drums:
- How to make a gated reverb
- How to use a transient shaper
I don't have good learning resources on those things but I am sure someone has!

I'm biased about reverb and think it is the solution to every mixing problem (except for the problem of having too much reverb), but I would definitely say that over-the-top reverb is one defining characteristic of the 80s percussion sound.

Again, thanks everyone for the helpful comments. I just finished (the first version of the) song, and I posted the result in the oringinal recordings section.

It's clear I have a lot to learn about electronic drums. I ended up mixing lots of samples, including Drumgizmo's Crocell Kit (acoustic sounding).

Sitala looks really interesting, but I ended up using LSP's Multisampler, which is great and very flexible.

I still have some more video game sound tracks to make, so I will be experimenting some more. Thanks again for the help!

Hello, finotti;

If you are feeling adventurous, you may wish to watch some videos on how to generate electronic drum sounds with Geonkick by Unfa. He has a few videos on the subject. Here is a link to one of them:

Here's a huge .sf2 Sound File for FluidSynth. It's been made from my Sonor Force 3007 Drum Kit with more that 20 Drums and also more than 20 Cymbals plus some percussive Sounds. Though, it's natural sounds only.

It's funny you said that as I had just found those and were looking into them a bit. I will likely give it a try. Thanks for pointing it out!

Interesting! Thanks for sharing that. I've downloaded it and will give it a try. Have you considered making a DrumGizmo kit with those samples? It will give it more flexibility, perhaps.

No, I'm not familiar with the use of DrumGizmo.
Even though I have it installed, I never used it so far.

Doesn't it load Hydrogen Drum Kits?

Not really related to drums, but I find TAL Sampler is one of the best instruments for recreating 80s-like sound. Not free, neither cheap but costs every cent to my opinion.

I make Synthwave music so I use old drum machine samples all the time. I'll recommend some of my favourite things to use.

Drum samples:

* Boss DR-550 Mk1
* Linn Drum LM1
* Linn Drum LM2
* Roland TR-707
* Roland TR-808

Plugins:

* TAL Reverb 3. It sounds amazing on 80s claps! There is a Linux version of that floating around somewhere as they open sourced some of their plugins a while back.
* u-he Diva which emulates various analogue synths. It also has a Linux version.
* ToneBoosters Reelbus which is a tape machine emulator - good for putting on the mixbus. Although there's no Linux version but I'm sure there are alternatives.
