Your description sound like it's Synthwave he's talking about - for typical Synthwave it's Linndrum, Yamaha RX5, Roland 606 etc etc samples you'll need - Hydrogen has some decent kits for that.

Drum samples:

* Boss DR-550 Mk1
* Linn Drum LM1
* Linn Drum LM2
* Roland TR-707
* Roland TR-808

Plugins:

* TAL Reverb 3. It sounds amazing on 80s claps! There is a Linux version of that floating around somewhere as they open sourced some of their plugins a while back.
* u-he Diva which emulates various analogue synths. It also has a Linux version.
* ToneBoosters Reelbus which is a tape machine emulator - good for putting on the mixbus. Although there's no Linux version but I'm sure there are alternatives.

Thanks @Death and @eufex for the helpful suggestions! This is all new to me and it is good to have some pointers. Samples from Mars have a sale on all their drum samples, and I've been considering it. It doesn't have the Yamaha RX5 (it seems) but it has all the other (it also seems).

Thanks again!

I got a bunch of my samples from this site years back. I remember some of them had some recording issues though with pops/clicks which doubled up with the transient on some kicks/snares & ruined the samples a bit so I had to look elsewhere to replace them. Most of the samples were great though and they might've even fixed that by now. I'm gonna have a look and see what's new. Thanks for reminding me about it :)
