Re: midi browser
With Mixbus (I assume the same with Ardour) you can audition MIDI files using the import function. It has a browser that lets you scroll through files.
You probably want something standalone, but this would work in a pinch.

Re: midi browser
I know you can sample the audio that way but how would I say for instance sample a drum midi file? Doesn't that mean that both Ardour and mixbus should have a built in sf2 player?ufug wrote:With Mixbus (I assume the same with Ardour) you can audition MIDI files using the import function. Re: midi browser
Yep but that's the issue in trying to avoid. I've tried that and also running MT Power kit in Carlabluebell wrote:timidityfunkmuscle wrote:Hey, is there a browser for linux to listen or sample midi files.
I was looking more for something where you open the directory with the files and click on them to sample them..
I think in Windows that's possible(??)
That way you hear what fits and then drag into DAW.
Can timidity be linked to a file manager?

Re: midi browser
qtractor can do that alright, eg. browsing in View > Windows > File System and double-click to play, provided you insert or connect a multi-timbral plugin or instrument on the MIDI Master Out bus...
it can play both audio pcm sample files (.wav, .ogg, .mp3, .flac, etc.) and/or standard MIDI files (SMF); no need to import or bring into the session, just click and listen when satisfied you can of course drag and drop onto the canvas timeline for further session editing and arrangement.
enjoy

Re: midi browser
Deadbeef can play midi files and has a file system plugin so I guess that could count as a browser

Re: midi browser
Actually, this does not work properly. In beginning of file notes are played percussive. I've made also bug report about it https://tracker.ardour.org/view.php?id=8351
