Use a short snippet, process it with the Paulstretch algo in Audacity (e.g. length factor 30) and feed it into your favorite sampler.
Now you have great and unique etheral sounds.

Paulstretch is awesome! I once took the "Bonjour" track from Disney's Beauty and the Beast and ran it through Paulstretch and a few other effects (I think I reversed it and put some reverb on it). The result was pretty cool, and (IMHO) an improvement on the original. My boys loved it, but of course my daughters weren't too keen.
