Pipe Chimes

Post by Michael Willis »

I recently inherited a set of chimes made by cutting a galvanized steel pipe into specific lengths, each with a string attached. They're played by holding it up by the string and striking the pipe with a large steel nail. I think my parents (or maybe aunt and uncle?) made this set decades ago as a novelty for church youth to play Christmas music.

Yesterday I sampled them and made a little fledgling SFZ. For being nothing more than a sampling newb with a cheap mic, I'm pleasantly surprised at how quickly it came together and how much I like the sound of it so far:

If anybody is interested, I can share the SFZ here with some kind of CC license once I'm done with it.

I think your chimes sound great. It would be nice to have it available as an SFZ.

Thanks everybody. Right now the SFZ is extremely simple, I programmed it to stretch out only three wave samples to cover more than two octaves. Now that I have a start, I want to learn some more features of SFZ (like round-robin), probably take some more recordings, and make it nicer before releasing it.

Can i get the raw samples? I'd like to work with them.

Sure, I can share, but what I have right now is extremely simplistic. I only sampled the C5, G5, and D6 chime, at only a few velocities and they're not very consistent velocities at that. Would you mind if I took some time to capture some more thorough samples before sending them to you?

Also, my E5, F5, and F#5 chimes are very flat, maybe around 20-30 cents, but I'm assuming that you have means of compensating for that.

EDIT: Also, what rate and depth would you prefer the samples? If I'm going to make another go at it, I may as well accommodate that. I was thinking 48k 24bit

I can wait for the final set. 48KHz 24-bit is good. I'll do any pitch correction needed before looping. The velocities need be only "in the ballpark", because I'll also do amplitude adjustments. If you can include a 3 second wave of "silence", that could be useful at getting rid of any environment/electronics noise.

Ok, I captured a better set of samples tonight. I ended up making the files 44.1kHz x 24bit. I tried to upload them to freesound.org with a CC0 license, but it said awaiting moderation and I don't know how long that will take. In the meantime, here they are on dropbox: https://www.dropbox.com/s/dan1bjd4p9it3 ... w.zip?dl=0

You will see by the file names that I captured C5, E5, G5, B5, and D6. I tried to capture samples suitable for 2xRR and 4 velocity layers, but I'm not sure I got enough for that. I'm fairly certain that there is enough content for at least 2xRR with 3 velocity layers. I'm only aware of it clipping one time that I struck one of the chimes too hard (I think the B), but I sampled another loud note on that one to make up for it.

I think these are actually an octave higher than I have them marked, but I opted to name them this way to make it easier to reach the notes with scoring software and/or smaller midi controllers.

I have to admit that I'm completely new to sampling. If something is amiss please let me know, I can certainly make another go at it.

Awesome! Would you mind if I wrote up a small README and put a CC0 License on this, and then host it somewhere more discoverable?

I would advise against CC0 and towards CC-BY-SA. The problem is that derivative works may be proprietary then. The author of Virtual Playing Orchestra slaps NC on anything non-copyleft and makes it proprietary.
