Orchestral tubas and solo tuba

Post by j_e_f_f_g »

A tuba section for the No Budget Orchestra. Plus a solo tuba.

Wish I had better samples to work with. It took lots of work just to get these in a useable state. Looping was a nightmare, and the result is not as good as I'd like. Still, it's better than Sonatina's tubas, which have some severe intonation issues.

All their samples are far too short to be useful. You need a sustain of at least 5 seconds to have any chance of creating a seamless loop. With lots of manual editing (and I've had many years experience with warmform editing/looping, so I know how to best improve/utilize a sample), I can sometimes work with shorter samples, but typically the results are not as good.

The tuba samples I had not only weren't very long, they also had intonation (pitch) problems, tone problems, noise/hiss/pops, etc. I put in about 30 hours of editing to get them to this point. I also resorted to using a synth to add in some elements I thought were missing from the samples. You'd be very surprised to compare the end result to what I had to start with.

But this is the first sample set I'm really ambivalent about. In particular, the looping is not up to my standards. I may do a bit more work on them to see if can improve them. But I really wish some of you guys could supply me with some better raw samples, so I could put together a kick-ass collection of free sfz instruments.

Hmmm

Maybe people with kids in school with orchestra music programs could have them "borrow' some instruments over a weekend for sampling..

Just imagine how great the 'No Budget Orchestra' will sound with beaten to ratshit high school instruments...

I fixed some of the looping issues. This is now a serviceable tuba.

I don't think tuba players can play a single note for 5 seconds. Now if you wanted "oom-pah" they'd be lining up! ;)
