Re: Orchestral chimes
Wow, those sounds real good, very real and expressive. Where did you get the samples ?
Thank you for sharing, nice work !

Re: Orchestral chimes
Most of the new stuff comes from freesound.org which supplies raw samples. Only the samples are supplied (ie, no sfz mapping file), and they always need work, as usually they aren't even trimmed. I typically first need to remove background hiss/noise via special noise reduction algorithms, since most of the samples are recorded in home studios on semi-pro equipment. Then I trim the waves. Then I have to do manual volume adjustments to get the balance smooth (and make the waves more loopable). Then I do any EQ adjustments to even out any tonal irregularities. Then if it's a pitched instrument, I use special software to reduce any pitch fluctuations, and make sure everything is A=440. Finally, if the waves are loopable, I loop them using a couple crossfade algorithms (sometimes even to make a wave longer for a more natural loop). Then I handwrite the sfz file to get the most optimized mapping. (soundfont editors/converters don't do that).DoosC wrote:Where did you get the samples ?
Yes, it's lots of work. But we desperately need a free General MIDI sound bank in sfz format. And it should sound at least as good as a mid-priced Yamaha/Roland/Korg hardware unit. I'm trying to get this accomplished, but I need the raw samples. We're not even 1/4 there, but at least I got a good set of the most common instruments. I'm already gigging with only the sfz instruments on gmaq's site, and it sounds better than my roland and yamaha gear. So it's working. But lots more to do.

Re: Orchestral chimes
Thanks for all the hard work on the SFZs, j_e_f_f_g! (And thanks for some of the other very silly and entertaining posts.)
