Looking to replicate synth sound

Post by etienne »

Hi there!

I am looking to replicate a very specific synth sound, and I have been unable to find a Free/Libre sample which is similar.

The sound can be found in this turorial on Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qEBiIv6EVA0 from the 1:25 mark to around the 1:40 mark.

I have synthv1 (http://synthv1.sourceforge.net) installed, and it would be great if someone could help me use it to recreate this synth sound, or alternatively if someone knows of a sample which is almost identical.

Thanks so much!

Thats a pretty trancy sound. I think it might be kind of like a supersaw. I have trouble creating those myself. You might try combining a bunch of saw waves and detuning some up or down a few cents. Add some white noise or distortion/overdrive and a big room reverb and you might start to get close. I don't usually use synthV1 but I'm pretty sure it has all the functions necessary for this. Also you might want to try the Tunefish synth for this. I have been playing with it recently and it seems to be well suited for big trance sounds. Some of the presets it has might even work.

Ack, that's an ugly synth sound. I call it "bee buzzing". I don't have any of that in my collection, but I know what it is. You take 4 sawtooth waves, 2 an octave higher than the other 2. The pairs are tuned 10 cents apart, with the upper pair a few cents apart from the lower pair. Apply a rapid, half a semitone rising pitch slew on the attack, with amp envelope like so:

Code: Select all

|\
| \------------
| \
| \
... to give the attack its "bite". Like this:

Add a kickdrum on every downbeat and there you have it: monotonous insect noise. Add the "big reverb" to make it more "spacey" (but still monotonous).

Warning: I threw this together. Not a lot of care was taken in looping.

It has better uses than boring gated trance leads though.

Also I think it is what Autechre used in Eutow https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8KsRIM4Jx4Q
