Tama Artwood Custom Snare 14x8

Post by Qualitymix »

This is a snare that I found on freesound.org and hacked up an sfz for.
I like it because it plays well on an electronic set.
Critique is welcome.

Not a fan of this. It has a harsh ringing overtone (that sounds like it's modulated by the undamped room where it was recorded). Makes it sound like there's a steel spring inside it.

I would have thrown this one away.

Well of course I wouldn't use the sound raw. I process my snares with compression and eq. A simple notch filter will get me where I want to be. And I get full control over the sound. The kind of music I write and play entails getting as real a sound as possible. Of course you would do things differently, just like I would have if I had been the one sampling it. But I can tell you that any snare I sampled would be without processing and imperfect by nature.

One I really like for playability is the jazz funk kit. You might check it out too. http://www.drealm.info/sfz/GregJazz/
Thats cool that you did that sfz though.
