Snare with cymbal sitting on top
In this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L_XJ_s5IsQc, Larnell Lewis plays a snare drum that has a cymbal sitting on top. It makes this crisp, abrupt snap sound. You can clearly see him strike it at about the 0:13 mark. Is there a name for using a snare+cymbal as a single percussion piece? Is that cymbal designed specifically for that use, or would just any cymbal do the trick? Does anybody know of a similar effect in one of the free sampled drumsets?

Re: Snare with cymbal sitting on top
I don't think it has a specific name besides "snare with a cymbal on it".
I came across this thing myself when at about 4am one night I was watching some "drummer reacts to snarky puppy" video where he pointed out .
And AFAIK it should work fine with just about any cymbal (different cymbals will yield slightly different sounds I would think)

Alternatively, anyone with a snare drum and a cymbal laying around willing to make sample?Michael Willis wrote: ↑Tue Mar 15, 2022 5:09 pm ..... Does anybody know of a similar effect in one of the free sampled drumsets?

Re: Snare with cymbal sitting on top
Well, I was thinking of visiting a pawn shop just to see if they have a cheap snare drum and splash cymbal, then spend an evening banging on it in front of a condenser mic, but I thought I would ask some questions first.christobal wrote: ↑Tue Mar 15, 2022 5:25 pm Alternatively, anyone with a snare drum and a cymbal laying around willing to make sample?

Re: Snare with cymbal sitting on top
This guy seem to talk about it a bit at least, testing a couple different sizes:

Sorry, I cannot help you here, but this video is truly fantastic! I love the song itself, Larnell Lewis is fantastic, and the keyboard solo at the end is just mind blowing!

@finotti watch the whole concert here: Snarky Puppy - We Like It Here
Re: Snare with cymbal sitting on top
"Snare with cymbal sitting on top"??
Is this supposed to be a sound, or a yoga position?
p.s. You could simulate this sound with a very short choked cymbal sample mixed very quietly into a snare hit.

Someone who never limits himself to just using drums for drum sounds is Tony Buck - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HW6d6DnWiJ0

I had the pleasure of working with Tony numerous times when he plays with The Necks - https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=the+necks
I know they don't have that Snarky Puppy groove but are fascinating.

Re: Snare with cymbal sitting on top
There are videos of Larnell Lewis learning brand new songs. Simply amazing. I'd not heard Tony Buck or The Necks before. @sunrat do you play in The Necks? Fascinating music.
In the vein of amazing drummers with cymbals on their drums, I present Louis Cole: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RuxzWqkyo0k

Re: Snare with cymbal sitting on top
Haha, no, I wish. I'm a sound engineer, and have worked at many Necks shows doing monitors (which is a rather easy job with them; set up at sound check and sit back to watch during the show}.
The Necks are Tony Buck on drums, Chris Abrahams on piano, Lloyd Swanton on bass, all of whom are involved in many varied musical projects.
Certainly a very good drummer. Interesting bass drum miking technique; I have used the same on occasion.Fascinating music.

Re: Snare with cymbal sitting on top
You could maybe get an effect like that by re-amping a sampled snare drum through a speaker with a snare drum strapped to it and a cymbal sitting on top. That would be far less work than making a new sample probably.
That is a cool sound - almost like an 80's gated reverb snare.
