Distortion especially with active basses probably means you are overloading the inputs. Assuming you are talking 600W RMS for stage use, that should be ample. The standard Ampeg SVT head is 300W and I've seen that used on more stages than any other and by the world's most famous bass players. The speakers matter too of course.
