Ardour: How do I get started with plug ins?

Post by arpegadream »

Hi, I am an intermediate guitarist with aspirations.

I have ardour on my tower and I have a monoprice USB Mixer.

I'm starting to understand Ardour, but I haven't tried plug ins, how and where do I get started? What do you suggest?

Hi @arpegadream,
it really depends on what distro you are on.

For example if you are on a Debian based one you could install many plugins by enabling a third party repository like KxStudio repositories.

in mix, nobody can hear your screen

Even more simple, you can use the plugins that come with Ardour. There are some simple ones to get you started, like compressor, delay and EQ.

There are a growing number of VST plug-ins being ported to Linux - Ardour on Linux should load VST and VST3 plug-ins if they are compiled natively for Linux, though I would recommend VST2 in preference to VST3 because Ardour's support for VST3 still has some bugs. I've made some commercially available plug-ins here:

https://www.overtonedsp.co.uk/

and specifically for Linux here:

https://www.acmt.co.uk/products/

All come with their own installer, manual(s) and instructions - basically you just install them to your VST plug-ins folder and Ardour should pick them up. If you want to install plug-ins manually, the equivalent of e.g. plugin.dll on Windows would be plugin.so on Linux.

For a guitarist I would also absolutely recommend checking out guitarix gxplugins.lv2 to use in a daw. They contain excellent amp simulation and many effect plugins for guitar/bass.
