They divide the vocals into notes and give you an opportunity to pitch them separately

Newtone is very similar to Melodyne. I think more people will be able to come up with suggestions for replacements if you mention that as it's more well known

There is no free software equivelant that I'm aware of.
There is WaoN - http://waon.sourceforge.net/
You can also do something like this - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2I-8ZFflOmU&t=1095s
There is also an audio to MIDI script for Ardour which you could try to combine with a pitch shifter.

There is an autotune https://x42-plugins.com/x42/x42-autotune but it's not quite the same as you're describing.

You can come a long way with it, it can detect separate notes and you can pitch those to the notes you'd like. With some automation you can really transform complete melodies or create new ones.sysrqer wrote: ↑Sun Feb 28, 2021 9:18 am There is an autotune https://x42-plugins.com/x42/x42-autotune but it's not quite the same as you're describing.

As far as I've understood, it's not been open-sourced, but it's available for free as in "free beer" - the GSnap -autotune style plugin is another alternative on Linux.

Honestly, I think it's pretty amazing.
