GSI

Post by eufex »

As mentioned in my intro post a couple of weeks ago I notices GSI announce an update to one of their free VSTs 'Varispeed' which is a model of one of the original tape delays the Copicat.

GSI specialise in physical modelling and I own a Crumar DMC midi controller with an inbiult Gemini DSP unit which has all the GSI stuff inbuilt (VB3 and all the elctric pianos etc etc) which is how I saw the announcement as a member of their Facebookk group/ Cheekily I asked the owner/developer Gudio if he would consider doing an experimental Linux build (hey brah, do a Linux build - if you say it's experimental you won't necessarily have to support it etc.). He said yes and posted it 2 days later.

Apart from me a few others over on the Facebook Linux Musicians group have also tried it and it works for most of us.
I set up some VMs for testing the other weekend and here are my roughly jotted down results:

Ubuntu 18.04 is a physical build, 19.04 is a physical build that’s falling apart. 20.04 is a new physical build.
Suse, Redhat, Manjaro VM builds quiclY thrown together: Jack doesn’t seem to work on any of them without further config, which I didn’t do so I did the testing in the DAWs via pulse audio, in a daw the means of output shouldn’t make any difference to a plugin, but obviously I couldn’t test the standalone or anything requiring Jack (Qtractor for example)
UbuntuStudio 18.04.5
Not working: glibc 2.29 required - 18.04 only goes up to 2.27
UbuntuStudio 19.04 (old install that is starting to 'fail' so other people may have differing results)
VST2
Reaper v6.14. Works
Renoise v 3.2. Sandboxed mode works, unsandboxed mode causes DAW crash
Qtracktor 0.9.6 Crash
CArla 2.0.0 Works
Ardour 5 Works
VST3
Reaper (all modes: buggy pluing, compartablity mode, nativeonly, separate proecss, dedicated progress): all crash
Standalone: no file extension so assumed it is a .sh file and used ./VariSpeed to run, wihch worked - users would need to know how to make it run.
Works with PulseAudio, doesn't work with Jack.
UbuntuStudio 20.04 (fresh install)
VST2
Ardour 5: Works
Bitwig 3.1.2 8 track version: works: small bitwig controls work but controls directly in the plugin gui do not (this may be a bitwig thing as I only use it for audio warpng and am not familiar with the plugin setup)
Tracktion Waveform 11: works but as is usual in Waveform I managed to get it (and the synth plugin on the same channel also) to crash, after restarting sandboxed varispeed still worked but not via the gui - via Waveforms own controls.
Qtraktor 0.9.7
VST3
Reaper: works
Bitwig 3.1.2 8 track version: works: small bitwig controls work but controls directly in the plugin gui do not (this may be a bitwig thing as I only use it for audio warpng and am not familiar with the plugin setup)
Standalone: Works with PulseAudio, choosing Jack for audio input caused crash with segmentation fault
OpenSuse Leap 15.2 (Quick Virtual Machine Build)
Only comes with GlibC 2.26 so won't work. It may be possible to make a local install of glibC 2.31 from TW repos but haven't attempted.
Untested.
Manjaro 20.1.2-201019-linux58 (Quick Virtual Machine Build)
VST2
Reaper - Working
Ardour 6.3.0 - working
Qtracktor - not tested (Jack not setup, actually I'm not even certain if Jack will work in a VM)
VST3
Reaper - Working
Standalone
Runs, connects to PulseAudio. Didn't test with Jack as not setup on the VM.
Fedora Workstation 33-1.2
VST2
Reaper - Working
VST3
Reaper - Working
Standalone - not tested
Further testing not done in Fedora: Jack not configured.

So for me at least, standalone failed in all instances with Jack but the plugin mostly worked - you'll get better mileage out of newer distros etc.

If you do download it, if you have the time obviously please send a quick email to Guido with your findings.

I'll just further iterate - I have absolutely nothing to do with GSi.

I haven't experienced any problems with the vst3 yet. I haven't played with it a great deal but it loads and I just chopped up and rendered an item with it in the folder track without any issues.

Interesting, I'll give a try. Even if I don't like the telemetry stuff (and the need of an internet connection) I'd be interested in trying the RE-201 Mark II emulation, which, according to my knowledge, it misses from Linux audio world (am I wrong?).
Edit: tried in Ardour 6.3, Mint 20.1, works ok. It gives the feel of 70's..

Well, I contacted him (Guido Scognamiglio) and he was very kind in responding quickly.
The answer was that there are no plans in the near future to build other plugins for our beloved platform.

All we can do is keep providing feedback etc. Developers need to know that there is 'something' there that makes it worthwhile for them, whether that be money (ultimately) or something that helps them keep developing their code.

Hi eufex

I'm keen on trying the Linux build of that myself.

When I goto this link, I can't see it anywhere. Has it been removed?
https://www.genuinesoundware.com/?a=downloads&c=2

I bought copies of VB3 and VB3-II and it's the only thing keeping me on windows.
All my work is done with Ubuntu these days

There's a "Linux Files" subpage on that page. Did you miss that?

Yeah, VB3 on Linux would be great. SetBFree is pretty good too though.
