I have uninstalled carla and reinstalled the version from git.

The plugin is running and working. Its a different sound if I turn it on or off. And there is a guitarix icon on top right but no way to open a gui

Might that be the reason for my problems?

Did you ever find a solution on this? I'm dealing with the same issue, and trying to get guitarix 0.4x seems impossible. Can't backport the testing version because of boost dependencies, can't compile from SF sources because of waf, no backports available.

EDIT: nvm, I"m an idiot. waf was bundled with the guitarix source. Managed to compile the latest source and now I'm good.

No, I paid for a guitar plugin from Audio Assault. It's too annoying to work hours and days just for having a guitar plugin - and in my case having no working guitar plugin.

Could you explain that a little more detailed? I don't understand what you did.

Re: Guitarix lv2 Plugin doesn't open GUI

I downloaded the source for guitarix from sourceforge and followed the README instructions to install.

What tripped me up was that it uses "waf" as a build tool, and that has been removed from Debian because the maintainers and Debian packaging team didn't get along. So I thought I was not going to be able to build it.

Turns out an executable version of "waf" is included with the guitarix code tarball, so I didn't have to install it after all. Just ran the commands as written in the readme and it installed.

Granted, I'd much rather have an official package, but I gather this will all be sorted with the next version of AVL anyway.

Re: Guitarix lv2 Plugin doesn't open GUI

This was one of the reasons I switched to Manjaro and never looked back - the Guitarix packages in many of the Ubuntu based repos seems to be outdated and had serious GUI issues, and building it from source took me almost 2h of painstaking searching the package manager for the long list of dependencies every time it would fail on one. That 2h was almost 2x as much time as it took to get Manjaro running and fully set up for pro audio for me, a moderately experienced Linux user that isn't a developer but knows how to run terminal commands.

I just want to add that although I GREATLY appreciate Guitarix for what it is, I think it's a toy if you're a more experienced player or tone crafter. I've tried almost every free amp sim on Linux, and the conclusion was you get what you pay for. I'm admittedly super biased because I have access to both a Bogner Uberschall and a Diezel head to reamp my guitar recordings through (god bless bandmates) but the Bogner is in the Guitarix library of amps ... and it sounds absolutely nothing like the real thing.

I have yet to test the Tube Amp Designer profiler package that's supplementary to the Kapitonov plugin suite - I just found it in the repos a few days ago, and I don't see my bandmate with the super nice tube amps until the middle of the month. I'll post a review once I test it out.

I guess you mixed up stuff a bit here. The "Bogner in Guitarix" is just the tonestack, not the full amp. Guitarix use a more generic set of valves in the amp simulation. To come close to the real thing you MUST use a IR-file within the convolver and then adjust the settings to your need.

That is as well part of the deal with the Tube Amp Designer from the Kapitonov suite, while this on is really great and beside that it create the IR file for you, it does as well some settings in the amp to come even closer to the real stuff. So a lot easier to use when it comes to simulate real amplifiers.
You'll have a lot of fun and great playing times with it for sure. :)
On the road again.

My full setup is https://www.dropbox.com/s/y8zlsdi6hzzct ... carxp?dl=0 I use the LSP Impulse Reverb plugin and load the Bogner cabinet IR from Ownhammer, so don't expect it to work when you load the Carla rack.

I can understand that; I'm actually switching back from using Arch for a few years, because I just got tired of the constant updates and changes that I had to deal with. Now I'm remembering why I left debian-based distros on my DAW. Ugh; I wish I could find a good middle ground. Nobody has really cracked the "stable core with solid up-to-date-apps" nut yet. Maybe it's unobtainable.

"toy" might be a bit hash; nothing compares to the real thing, but I can get usable guitar tones from it. I normally go with hardware modelers for convenience, but guitarix seems to provide an acceptably competitive alternative. Then again, I don't have top-of-the-line gear, nor do I consider myself a big "tone guy". I don't care much about nailing the sound of real-life amps, I just need functional guitar sounds for the mix.

Okay, toy is a little harsh. It's not a Line6 Spider amp by any means.

In order to find it usable though, I have to incorporate other plugins into the chain - specifically the LSP Impulse REVERB (not the response plugin - the reverb plugin allows for 4 different IRs, 1 IR across 4 channels, or anything in between and omg is it fat when you run a good IR across all 4), the EQ10Q gate plugin before the signal chain, and even with all that, it doesn't hold a candle to my bandmates Kempers or AxeFX units.

Uhi, that is a real heavy setting. The Tube distortion plugin with this settings, already clip the hell out of the signal and blow it far above the limits. Then the settings in GxAmplifier, with the full blown Pregain/Distortion/Drive, heavy, really heavy. I imagine that there are no dynamics left in the output.

If I would do such a heavy setup in guitarix, I would use the Tubescreamer, a moderate preamp setting with just the 12ax7 tubes, the tonestack and then the poweramp with a single ended power tube followed by the convlolver with the IR file.
On the road again.
