EZDrummer alternative?

Post by flagos »

Hi to all. Any of you know some drummer application/plugin for linux?

I mean something a virtual drummer, like EzDrummer or something similar.

Thanks!

Both of rghvdberg's suggestions are excellent. You can also try Hydrogen if you are interested in a drum sequencer app.

I am using hydrogen to trigger Drumgizmo (someone on these forums posted a kit for hydrogen) and that is the best results I have had programming drums on Linux.

Thanks very much for the answers so far.

I already work with Ardour in conjunction with Hydrogen. But 'm looking for something I saw in the macintosh environment. I think they called it "virtual drummer". It was a plug-in that would 'play' over a given bass track, and you could modify fills/beats/styles/sounds while playing. it was fabulous.

And I was wonder if there is something similar for linux.

Thanks again.

PD. I did't try DrumGizmo yet.

For me, MT Power Drum Kit works best, it even has the mixer which is similar to EZDrummer's:

https://www.powerdrumkit.com/

I have tried the AVL Drums and I found MT more flexible (especially because of the mixer).

For me drag & drop from MT Power Drum Kit to Mixbus/Ardour does not work, so it's usability is bit limited. From thread MT-PowerDrumKit Alternative ? you can find script which will extract midi loops from plugin to separate file. Those files can be imported, but this is annoying way to work. Also thread Midi drum pattern browser plugin has covered area, but no good solution still.

In general, for question 'replacement for EZDrummer' answering 'hydrogen/av drumkit/drumgizmo' is like answering to question 'Our band needs drummer' with 'I can borrow my drums' :-P

I understand. Haven't tried the drag & drop function, to be honest. I'm usually trying to use tools that are as "agnostic" as possible, so in this case, I would best advise to make your own MIDI loops or tracks or buy them from Groove Monkee, for example and just use the drum plugin for the drum sounds. I'm really tired of software that wraps stuff into their own format and not use universal alternatives. That's why I'm seriously considering learning more DrumGizmo/DGEdit and make my own kits from plain wav samples.

Currently, however, I've got EZDrummer, Superior Drummer 3, Steven Slate Drums 4 & 5 all working in Mixbus and Reaper (using Wine and LinVST to convert the dlls). But the long term plan is in the above. :)

If need is only for drum sounds, then AVL drumkits with 'fan out' config, all drums to own channel is enough for me. 6 Separate channels to mix how you want. I don't know if DrumGizmo has same option available?

Linux has some drum machines and drum samplers. What the OP wants is a robot drummer. The only software I can think of is Backup Band :

I've never tried it, but apparently it does have robots.

I have tried, it is great, but not for this. It is robot for playing pre-programmed backgrounds for selected styles, no for composing.

Thanks for sharing this. Excellent presentation and an accurate assessment of where we are.

I was very excited to learn about Sononym, I had never heard of it before and I think it will be a huge help for me (I'm a loop hoarder).
