So … I don't see why commercial plugins couldn't be available as source code. Of course it makes no sense to use some copy protection since it can be removed. It's probably not very attractive for programmers who make a living out of it. But it is possible.

Open Source code doesn't have to be free as in free beer.
That's a fair point. I'm not completely closed to the idea. I believe Ardour has a similar business model. Personally I would prefer to keep my sources private but rely on as many open source libraries as possible and contribute to those as well. Atleast this way I can give back to the ecosystem a little. The vast majority of my DSP code can be found in a package I maintain on Github called Ddsp.

Side Note: I'm not sure if any of the LV2 developers are active in this thread, but they really deserve so much more credit for making LV2 than they get. It's such a great format and not only for linux. Writing a wrapper for it was relatively painless and straightforward. I really hope to see it overtake VST!

I meant to reply to this sooner but forgot. The news post was just to announce support for LV2 on linux. I've supported VST2 on linux for about 2 years now and VST3 on linux since a couple months ago. :D

I don't think you're rude. Drunk with power and beer, and belching pizza breath all over the place, sure, but rude? Never. :D

Good post, and i'm happy to see you offer your wares here, and anywhere else to do with linux. If I like your stuff, i'll pay for it, the same as i've donated to various opensource projects over the last decade or so. LV2 is an excellent format, imho, and i'd like to see all the orchestral sample developers take it on as an alternative to Kontakt (NI), who currently think Linux is some sort of devil spawn to be cast into the pits of Hades at every opportunity.

Nice to see a commercial plugin dev who isn't so inclined.

So welcome, and don't mind the naysayers. They're certainly entitled to their opinion, but it's just that, an opinion. Take it or leave it as you want.

Dave Drobilla and Steve Harris are the LV2 giants on whose shoulders so many stand, along with others who have contributed.

Peace,

Alex.

p.s. Jack Winter is not rude. He's Jack. 'Nuff said.

Thanks, and you have no idea how close to the truth you come with the beer/pizza comment ;)

I'm the creator of Cut Through Recordings and I wanted to chime in. I'm sorry for the controversy that this has caused. I develop all of my plug-ins using Dplug and I've been advocating for better linux support. In the last few years we've gotten VST, VST3, and now LV2 working on linux which was huge for me. Personally I love linux and open source software in general. Dplug is completely open source but most of the plug-ins built on top of it are closed source. In some ways it feels wrong to sell software on linux but I would rather support linux than not support it. Nothing would make me happier than to see linux become the leading OS for music creation and production.

Reading through this thread inspired me a bit to open source at-least one of my plug-ins so I decided to open source POP Sound Shaper (one of the free plugins available on my site). If anyone is interested it's now on github here https://github.com/ctrecordings/POPSoundShaper.
Fasinating is, that you, as a close (and open, kudos) source developer are the only one in this thread who response respectfully to those who prefer OpenSource.
Thanks for that.

You weren't particularly polite yourself to people with a different viewpoint. You get what you give and all that...

Okay, then thank you, as well, for your very useful contribution to solve a issue.
