No midi port in Helm?

Post by tavasti »

Hi!

Wanted to try Helm, and launched it as standalone app. Unfortunately not very successfull testing, because no input midiport, neither jack nor alsa midi.

There seems to be issue about it also https://github.com/mtytel/helm/issues/152

Downloaded package is apparently built for ubuntu 14.04, and I'm running 18.04, should I try to build it myself?

Does that work for you?

I don't have an answer to your question because I don't really use standalone synths these days but I might be able to offer a workaround. Iif you just run helm in jalv its basically like having it as a standalone. just run "jalv.gtk http://tytel.org/helm" in a terminal

In Helm, click on the logo at the top left. It will show a dialog with ALSA MIDI port connections at the bottom.

Indeed, it shows, and I can select which sources to select, but nothing works still :-(

Do you have a JACK/ALSA MIDI bridge running? If so, stop it before launching Helm. Helm might need sole access to the ALSA hardware MIDI.

No a2jmidid or a2jmidi_bridge running if that was what you are meaning.

And if something else, indeed plugging in midi device it will appear also in jack midi under system/something. Don't know how to disable that?

Helm works out of the box for me without starting any midi bridges. If the alsa midi bridge is running it still works. I can play via my LPK 25 midi keyboard, although it's not connected to helm in catia.
