Zyn and Ardour

Post by finotti »

I've spent a lot of time this morning setting up some Zyn patches for MIDI tracks in Ardour.

The first thing I noticed (I hadn't used Zyn in a while) was that when opening ZynAddSubFX LV2 plugin in Ardour, I would get a blank screen for a few seconds, a lot longer than it used to, before the usual Zyn screen would show up. That did not happen before... But, after that it worked great as usual.

Note that this is a desktop running on an Intel i7-4771, 32 GB of memory, running on a couple of SSDs, so it is not a slow computer.

I made quite a few patches for different tracks. Saved the session and quit (no crash or anything) normally. When I reopened Ardour, some, but not all, of these new patches were gone, in the sense the the Zyn plugin would open with no patch loaded at all.

Has anyone experienced something like this recently? I am not sure if it is Zyn or Ardour.... Both are from KXStudio (and I'm running Debian Sid). Zyn is not the GIT one, so it's the old interface.

Code: Select all

$ apt policy zynaddsubfx
zynaddsubfx:
  Installed: 2:3.0.3-1kxstudio1
  Candidate: 2:3.0.3-1kxstudio1
  Version table:
 *** 2:3.0.3-1kxstudio1 500

        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
     3.0.3-1 500
        500 http://httpredir.debian.org/debian sid/main amd64 Packages

Code: Select all

$ apt policy ardour
ardour:
  Installed: 2:5.12.0-1kxstudio2v5
  Candidate: 2:5.12.0-1kxstudio2v5
  Version table:
 *** 2:5.12.0-1kxstudio2v5 500
        500 http://kxstudio.linuxaudio.org/repo gcc5/free amd64 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
     1:5.12.0-3 500
        500 http://httpredir.debian.org/debian sid/main amd64 Packages
     1:5.12.0-1kxstudio2 500
        500 http://kxstudio.linuxaudio.org/repo stable/free amd64 Packages
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I can test it tomorrow, but I'm not aware of problem with zyn and Ardour except some minor crashes when editing parameters.

Thanks, lilith!

Although I've done some more experiments, and I think we can rule out Zyn, and it also happened to Yoshimi.

I've replaced Zyn with the git version (from KXStudios) and the interface popped up instantly, as it was usual. So, I think there was something going on with the other version... But new version runs great! (And I really like the new interface!)

But it did not fix the patches being lost. I've done a few experiments and I'm completely lost on what it could be. It seems that the problem is with Ardour, though. (Or something is the MIDI track... I did remove all automation and patch changes, though.)

I've posted it in the Ardour forum: https://community.ardour.org/node/17772

This works here without problems. If you don't get support go to the ardour IRC channel. The main devs Paul (las) and Robin (rgareus) are usually online and it's more efficient than the forum. You don't need to save patches in Zyn. You just edit the parameters and save your Ardour session there's nothing more to do. The Zyn settings are saved in Ardour/YourProjectName/plugins/anynumber/
