Reverb plugin

Post by spamatica »

Hej folks,

Having a temporary dive regarding reverbs, feel like I need to find something new to play with... or maybe new ways.
So, I thought I would just throw out the question, what reverbs are you currently happily using?

I've been working on one for a few months, you can find a working beta release here: https://github.com/michaelwillis/dragon ... b/releases

My specific goal is to have a good algorithmic concert hall reverb on Linux, but I'm also interested in feedback on the smaller room and studio presets.

Right now it doesn't have a UI, I'm just using the fallback to sliders that I get from Ardour and Carla; rghvdberg has stepped up to work on that and has made lots of commits to his fork of the project, I have high hopes for it: https://github.com/rghvdberg/dragonfly- ... its/master

Also consider jumping into the rabbit hole of impulse responses if you haven't already. Lots to explore.

I think it's a matter of what you are making, and personal taste. Are you making electronica, or recording small-band rock or jazz, or recording an operatic vocalist with a concert grand piano, or arranging a full orchestral suite? I think that the Dragonfly Reverb is really good for the latter two, but I still haven't had any feedback from people trying it out on the former two.

My top reverbs:
MVerb
Zita Rev1
CAPS Plate
rkrlv2 reverb
convolution (IR or klangfalter)

I tend to reach for algorithmic since my computer wasn't the most powerful. Convolution just depends on what IRs you have and use. The bricasti M7 IRs are some of the best afaik. I do wish there was a great spring reverb for surf. :)

I'm doing electronic music, and some ambient guitar works, and if I get it done acceptable way, rock-punk-hardrock-metal and all combinations from all these.

Thanks for the replies!

i saw the thread about the dragonfly-reverb, I'll have to test it! But I'm a bit wary about using it while it's not considered finished. If I use it in a project I'm hoping that five years from now it will work and sound the same.

I'm mostly doing pop/rock where most of the time the reverb is supposed to sound like a real space. I did venture into impulse response reverbs a long time ago, I suppose there are more stable plugins now, I'll have to give it a try again, just hoping it doesn't take too much CPU.

And, yeah, I saw ssj71 mentioned spring reverbs, are there no good ones currently?

There are lots of spring IRs around the web, and some impressive, I guess, algorithmic vsts in Windows/Mac but don't think there is anything like that for us natively.

Got Harrisons Plugin Essentials from discount, so now I try to work with their Gverb.

Depending on the task, I can use either MVerb, GVerb+ or Klangfalter.

I really appreciate convolution reverbs because when using impulse responses from real hardware it adds a bit of "analogue" feeling to your mix, which can be extremely pleasant to the ear. I tend to think it "cements" your sound.

But at the same time, trying to fine-tune your sound with a convolution reverb is not as efficient as with a good algorythmic reverb, that's where GVerb+ and MVerb come in handy. I especially like GVerb+'s ease of use.

There are also TAL-Reverb 1, 2 & 3 available thanks to DISTRHO-ports, which can possibly get the job done, but I didn't get to use them much so I can't recommend them yet...

They might work based on Carla...? Here is the English translation http://www.linux-magazine.com/Issues/2015/175/Carla of a German article that has helped me a lot. I'm really impressed how smoothly the winodws-vst plugins now run on Linux...

I can get them working with wine/linvst, and generally they do run smoothly it's true, but after some experiences in the past I am always wary when I have one of those plugins running.

But think it shows an interesting example of an area where linux is quite far behind. We have great sounding short and long reverbs but there is nothing that goes near a spring sound, obviously it's possible to produce it somewhat well artificially but there seems to be only a handful two of people making plugins.
