LSP plugins and Bitwig 2.0

Post by jonetsu »

Hello,

I got the latest LSP plugins for this new OS (Linux Mint 17) installation, the lsp-plugins-lxvst-1.0.23-x86_64.

I copied the .so files to the regular vst folder where all other plugins are but the following error is reported by Bitwig, one for each .so file:

Code: Select all

com.bitwig.flt.library.metadata.reader.exception

CouldNotReadMetadataException: could not read metadata> Could not read
VST plug-in metadata.

64 bit plugin host reported errors: No metadata found in process output

32 bit plugin host reported errors: pluginhost returned non zero
exit code 255
Any idea what the problem could be ?

UPDATE

The directory where all other plugins are is ~/vst/

When I moved all LSP plugins to /usr/lib/vst/ then they were recognized by Bitwig, eg. they retuened metadata. Might be that there is a hardcoded path in the plugins, maybe to the core library.

UPDATE2

This is very likely the case. I left lsp-plugins-vst-core.so alone by itself in /usr/lib/vst and moved all other plugins in ~/vst/LSP/

All LSP plugins returned metadata to Bitwig and can be loaded. .. Well, no. All plugins EXCEPT for the compressor-based plugins like expander, dynamic processor, compressor, etc...

Ironically, I looked again at the LSP plugins specifically for the dynamic processing and these are the ones that do not load ! :(

Hi!

Here is the part of Readme file:
The usual directories for LinuxVST are:
* /usr/lib/vst
* /usr/local/lib/vst
* /usr/lib64/vst
* /usr/local/lib64/vst
You may untar the folder and copy it there. You can not change the name of the directory because plugins require it to be named as in distribution.

Actually, here is the complete list of directories where LSP Plugins do search the core library:
~/.vst
~/.lxvst
~/lxvst
~/vst
/usr/local/lib64
/usr/lib64
/lib64
/usr/local/lib
/usr/lib
/lib
Also please ensure that there is no previously installed core library file because actually all plugins are stored in the core library and another *.so files are just wrappers that execute the corresponding plugin from the core library.

Maybe this information could be helpful.

Hello,

This brings two points. The most important is, why are the compressor-based plugins not recognized ? See detailed information below.

The other point is, when you mention that ~/vst/ is recognized, you mean ~/vst period, isn't it ? And not for instance ~/vst/LSP/ Eg. there's no scan of sub directories, isn't it ?

Detailed information ----

All LSP plugins are in /usr/lib/vst/

Here is the listing.

Code: Select all

% cd /usr/lib/vst

lsp-plugins-vst-trigger-midi-stereo.so
lsp-plugins-vst-trigger-mono.so

Here is what Bitwig sees. Why aren't the lsp-plugins-vst-compressor-lr.so, lsp-plugins-vst-dyna-processor-stereo.so, lsp-plugins-vst-sc-expander-stereo.so and others not seen by Bitwig and reporting, for each plugin that is not seen:

Code: Select all

com.bitwig.flt.library.metadata.reader.exception

CouldNotReadMetadataException: could not read metadata> Could not read
VST plug-in metadata.

64 bit plugin host reported errors: No metadata found in process output

32 bit plugin host reported errors: pluginhost returned non zero
exit code 255
The plugins are 64 bit, for instance:

Code: Select all

% file lsp-plugins-vst-sc-dyna-processor-stereo.so
lsp-plugins-vst-sc-dyna-processor-stereo.so: ELF 64-bit LSB shared object, x86-64, version 1 (SYSV), dynamically linked, BuildID[sha1]=65b1e49b49d7982a0de9e9265fe1d4f11450f997, stripped
Please note that this is a brand new system, Linux Mint 18 and as such, uses "gcc5". I had to get the Mixbus version compiled for gcc5. I was warned that most commercial plugins have no problems with such systems, but there can be problems with open source plugins. Could this be a case where all compressor-based LSP plugins were not compiled for "gcc5" support whereas the others were ?

That's too strange. Currently I don't understand such behaviour. Probably I need to debug it by myself. Is there a free demo verison of Bitwig?

Yes, at:

Mixbus 32C also gives only a partial list :

I've installed Bitwig Studio. I can instantiate all plugins but the UI is not visible:

Also I strongly recommend to use LV2 version of LSP plugins under Mixbus and Ardour.

I see interesting thing: you've got 'LSP [VST]' branding string in Mixbus.
But I've changed the branding string to 'LSP VST' times ago.
That seems that you've probably having somewhere conflicting LSP VST Core library.

The archive is: lsp-plugins-lxvst-1.0.23-x86_64.tar.gz and was downloaded from Sourceforge earlier today. This is a brand new OS and there was no prior installation of LSP plugins. This is the very first time. No LSP plugins were copied from the previous system.

Observation: there is no need to have such long names I think. In Bitwig, it prevents choosing the right plugin since the popup windows is too narrow for such long names (works fine with all other plugins though). See screen shot below.

Here LSP plugins, the ones that show up, work. But I'm interested in the compressor-based plugins which do not show up.

I've downloaded file from Sourceforge and manually installed packages. My installation folder is: /usr/local/lib/vst/lsp-plugins-lxvst-1.0.23-x86_64
Image

Please look at the branding string on the screenshot:
Image
The branding string is 'LSP VST'. You have 'LSP [VST]'.
Also, additionally, the Spektrumanalysator plugin has very old design.
It looks out much more accurate now:
Image

It seems that there is somewhere a library that returns plugin metadata with old branding name.
Also please ensure that you don't have LSP Plugins installed from the Linux Mint repository.

OK, thanks. I've removed all traces of LSP, and redownloaded and re-installed. Transcript is below, including checking out the full disk for *lsp* prior to download. BTW, there are no lsp plugins in Linux Mint 18 standard repo.

So now the compressor-based plugins are shown in Bitwig:
bwLSP2.png
The right ID string is shown in Mixbus, but, the compressor-based plugins are not shown:
LSP-Mixbus2.png
Would this have to do with not using LV2 plugins in Mixbus ?

But then, when trying out the compressor in Bitwig, the plugin GUI was white for about 7 seconds, then the GUI was shown. When hovering the mouse over the GUI the display will freeze. When trying to move a knob, the display will also freeze. Moving a knob using the Bitwig controls below results in a very noticeable lag making it not usable. There is a a problem with the GUI display.

I've tried the param EQ in Mixbus and the sound is very good.

Have you tried to re-scan plugins in Mixbus from configuration panel and then restart it? I think that will help.

LV2 version is independent of LinuxVST and vice verse, so you're not required to use LV2 or LinuxVST.

I've never tries LSP Plugins under Bitwig Studio. According to current information, I'm having the same issues at my home PC. This issue needs to be analyzed. Different hosts -> different behaviour with the Plugin's UI.

Yes and no. Commercial plugins tend to perform in a similar way on all DAWs. When a commercial plugin does not work in a DAW, it's immediately the DAW that is concerned. The way commercial plugins are made might be a good hint on assuring interoperability. After all, they are built to run as good as possible. To have as smooth of a commercial venture as possible, to minimize support issues and increase good reputation.

Considering DAWs as black boxes, Bitwig is largely self-contained:
