Native Access

Hi, does Native Access (the Native Instruments install manager) work with people? I downloaded and installed it, but it does not run.

I am using Kx Studio with Wine 1.8.

I am trying to migrate to Linux here, but absolutely need Kontakt and Reaktor for example.

From a quick search it seems like native instruments stuff does work. What happens? Have you run it from a terminal to get any errors?

Good idea about command line. I'm really new to Linux. If I just wine native access.exe, I get complaints about missing Quicktime, Visual C (I guess, msvcp140.dll) and concrt140.dll. I didn' realize that the Wine loader does not by default show error messages if you run from the GUI. So I will try to install those first.

Oh, and I just realized my Linux partition is full, the system didn't warn me of this. I didn't use the installation for a while and I guess the last updates filled everything up. Hmm this might also have caused stuff...

I think you can install all that stuff with winetricks, just in case you didn't know.

Hmm the Visual C++ 2015 redistributables, as well as some older ones ARE installed. So I copied the missing dlls by hand from my real Windows installation, removed Wine, and installed the latest 2.04rc staging branch, and now I get at least an error message that I filed to Bugzilla...

Unhandled exception: unimplemented function concrt140.dll.??0_ReentrantBlockingLock@details@Concurrency@@QEAA@XZ called in 64-bit code (0x000000007b450b6a).

+ a ton of data on top of that.

Hmm, I will download the original Komplete ISOs from Native Instruments site, and try to install the software individually from them, that should work. But that's like a few dozen 5GB files :( Native Access would have made this much more easy...

Hello Taika!

Have you experienced any improvement on using Native Access under Linux?

Can you share any eperience or advice? I have Komplete Ultimate and I'm looking forward to using it with Linux.

Cheers :)

A couple things to consider,
1. Native Access is the registration tool, not the installer,
and unregistered products typically allow for (generous) 30 minute sessions
before being restarted, or if a plugin, unloaded/reloaded.
A lot can be done with your Ultimate purchases in 30 minute sessions.

Kontakt only allows 15 minute sessions, probably to aid their
army of sound-library developers.

Since your installers are on a hard-disk, this may not apply to you,
but some NI products install from an iso image, and their take
on iso images, is not compatible with linux cd/dvd support, perhaps correctable
in a wine update, or maybe someone expert at iso formats knows a way,
can study, and provide a solution.
I've forgotten to try winetricks to install their iso's, that's a possibilty.

In an extreme case, one might need a windows install, and sneakernet
things from partition to partition, and maybe register by copying some registry snippets,
if one is fluent in the registry editing business.

I own Razor, Prism, and Komplete Essentials, and use the free Reaktor Player
with choice ensembles, and love NI products. Massive works very well, as do most of
their older apps. Hope you get into using 'Form',
it get's only rave reviews. (you lucky dog, you! )
Cheers

I don't know about Native Access but I have installed the Kontakt (5.6 I think) demo and Reaktor demo using whatever those installers were and Kontakt and Reaktor seem to work pretty well with LinVst.

Usually I use the wine from winehq which is wine staging version 2.22 at the moment.

Older wine versions might have some problems with Kontakt etc

If you are having trouble with wine, I'd recommend uninstalling it and then try the winehq version for your distro if that's possible.

I'd uninstall wine on debian/ubuntu by using sudo dpkg --purge wine, or something like that.

I think (I'm not certain) that the Visual C++ 2015 redistributables can be installed via winetricks vcrun2015

FWIW, in order to install my old komplete8 on linux I had to mount the DVDs like this: mount -t udf -o uid=500,gid=500,unhide /dev/sr0 /mnt

The unhide option had me stumped for a while.

Still haven't managed to get the native access application running in wine..:S

Thanks for sharing your command knowledge! I'll give it a try.
Hopefully the FWIW is a harvest of really good new music, made with tools
that in some cases, only valuable shared knowledge makes available.
Cheers

Hello man, thanks for your detailed answer. My SSD came with Service Center, although I don't know the real difference beteen it and Native Access I hope at least will launch and work fine.

I don't know much about Win registry, but in the worst case scenario I could use a VM to run temporarily the VST that I need. I haven't done that previously buy I suppose I can give it a chance...

Hey, I will definitely check the Wine version, but I yet have to decide which Linux distro is best for music production (AVlinux+KXStudio perhaps?).

I'm not a Linux newbie, but I haven't seriously used it to produce music. What I do have decided is the DAW: Reaper. It seems powerful and cheap.

Thanks.

I have the SSD but I will have this in consideration in case the installation fails. Thanks.

Your command worked just fine! I put my Form iso in the tray,
ran your command, browsed to the cd, and ran the installer,
which completed successfully!

I'd suggest just installing a few at a time, rather than the whole enchilada.
Guitar Rig for the effects rack, Massive, Absynth, FM8 and Monarch to cover synths
and keys, and Kontakt if you want other instruments.

The West Africa percussion library is far more than the title implies,
one of the better implementations for rythyms available. And Battery
is quite capable for drums in general.

It's pretty easy to record favorite NI kits using Timemachine, convert the samples from .w64 to wav,
and import them one by one into a Hydrogen drumkit, and rename/export the results
as a new kit.
Hope all goes well.

I tried Native Access from the NI site and it needs a iphlpapi.dll override for an unimplemented function.

There are probably more overrides.

Native Access seems to make Wine use qt5 and qt5 networking.
