How to get MIDI output from guitarrix?

Post by bartok »

I have read in different pages it is possible, but I can't find how.

Basically what I would like to do is trigger Zyanddsubfx sounds with my guitar. I know rackarrack does it, but it doesn't detect pitch accurately in my computer (may be a mic issue, but have to try other options before spending money in a new mic). Also tried aubionotes, which works even but worse than rackarrack.

I tried connecting the midi output from Guitarrix in Jack to the midi input of Zynaddsubfx (just like I do with my midi keyboard), and it doesn't work. No sound, no signal.

What could I be doing wrong here?

Thank you in advance.

Guitarix didn't convert Audio2Midi. Only MidiCC messages will be generated or come through, to inform about the internal state. This is usually used to sync multiple instances of guitarix, or inform a second party launcher (Display messages).

The Audio2Midi conversation is drooped from guitarix, because it turns out to be UN-usable (the same issue as with the rackarrack midi out)

We've leaved the Audio2Midi conversation in the gxtuner.lv2 plug which comes with guitarix, therewith you can test it, if you wish, but, to be honest, I've developed it, and, I cant recommend it for serious use, true, for the fun of it, driving some bass sounds with beat boxing in the mic, or a spacey synth sound, it's a lot of fun, but for a pitch correct Audio2Note conversation, No, not happened, srry.
On the road again.

I have successfully got mono guitar to midi going with aubio tools and connected it to Zyn etc via jack. It has to be started from the command line and connected with qjackctl or similar. I cannot remember the command but if you are interested I can find it out. It only works for slow playing. Tracking is better for higher notes so you can get a little more by playing high and transposing down on the synth. Great fun :D

I got curious and tested this in Carla with gxtuner.lv2 controlling ObXd, and it works reasonably well. gxtuner must trig in mono, but with synth settings with long notes you can easily build harmonics from a sequences of notes:

And a know lead line from Genesis "Ripples":

It is true, that tracking requires a lot of control over the picking style, and that sometimes it trigs strange unwanted notes. It depends on the sound source though. I think that adding a plugin to tamper with the note attack might change responsiveness. An envelope follower, compressor or transient processor perhaps.
I don't think it's bad actually. It's definitely a lot of fun to play with.

Thanks Tramp for chiming in and clearing doubts. Anyway, wonderful piece of software. Top class imo.

To English Guy:

I made aubionotes work, however, the result was underwhelming. A lot of false notes and undesired octave changes. Did it work well enough for you? If so, may you share your configuation?

That's a pretty decent result. Far from what I have gotten so far. What hardware are you using? Mic, guitar cable to sound card? How did you setup aubiopitch and aubioonset?

This is the Carla setup I used. It may require tweaking to fit your sond card. Mine is an M-Audio 1010:

It requires ObXd, gxtuner and an EQ plugin, to get rid of very low thumps. You should be able to load it.
Guitar is an Ibanez LP copy, OEM jack wire into sound card.
