Bulk patch connections idea…

Post by wolftune »

So, I appreciate the tools for patch-bay stuff (Catia and others), but the whole functioning as a metaphor for cables is a bit tedious sometimes.

Is there a way to copy and paste connections? Sometimes I'd like to just unplug all of a certain connection and plug it in somewhere else. For example, I might want to insert an effect before the master out. It would be nice to be able to simple grab all the connections going into the master out and plug them in one go into the effect. It might also be nice to select all the output connections from a particular device and copy the same connections for a new output from another device…

These things ought to be possible, and if they are, I hope someone can clue me in. Otherwise, maybe the patchbay apps can be updated to do this…?

Yeah, that's pretty close to what I imagine. I'd want ideally to have "cut" as well as "copy".
And eventually it would be nice to be able to highlight several connections by shift-clicking or cntrl-clicking or something instead of only moving all connections at once. Basically, I'm thinking operate the same way all other sorts of clipboard stuff works. Select any combination of connections (but only that relate to one port at a time because there's no logical way to do this across separate ports, aside from maybe a tied stereo pair). If there was the ability to select multiple but not all connections, then we'd also want a contextual menu "select-all" command to quickly select everything.

Anyway, I do want to be clear that these are all long-term ideas and should not get priority over working out basic functions and stability. But I think these ideas would be universally appreciated.

Great. I agree that cut is not necessary. Besides convenience, the one reason I liked it was because it helps avoid excessive visual clutter in the interim where tons of things are connected. But I'm not convinced that it makes sense. It's really extraneous.
