running two firewire audio interfaces parallel

Post by lilakmonoke »

hi all ... i want to run two different audio interfaces parallel. my trust in linux is unlimited ;-)

- rme fireface 800, my main interface already working great via a firewire card with intel chipset
- art tubefire8 which will give me 8 tube mic preamps. apparently it is supported according to ffado: http://ffado.org/?q=comment/311#comment-311

now im not sure how to go about this, any hints are welcome:

- run both from one firewire card doesnt feel like a good idea. get another firewire card? or could i daisychain both devices? theoretically yes but ...
- then pipe the new channels into jack as described on this page: http://jackaudio.org/faq/multiple_devices.html

now, i know there could be clock incompatabilities but i need more microphone pres and why buy new stuff when you can make it work. does anybody here run 2 audio interfaces at the same time?

is this compatible with carla and cadence which are my main jack applications?

I used two Mackie 1642 in chain without any problems. It also worked flawlessly with a Mackie 1642 and a Edirol FA-101. But I have to admit they use the same chip. If you daisychain firewire devices it's like one device for jack.

I once used a PCI and a PCIe soundcard at the same time under Jack with the "audioadapter".
How and if this works with firewire I have no idea, but it should work.

Because qjackctl or cadence recognizes and uses both soundcards thanks to the "audioadapter", you can comfortably use both at the same time. Synchronizing both soundcards would be useful. I have also described this in "Multiple Soundcards".

Would still make sense: - JACK/Audio2RAM is everything! ;-) -

thats good news! so you mean all the channels will show up in carla automatically? i have to try this ...

Maybe jackman scripts could be helpful too in your case:
