Ubuntu Studio or KUbuntu for PPA installation?
Hi.
I'm about to download and install the latest Ubuntu distro, on top of which I want to install all the kxstudio packages via PPA.
I'd like to go with Ubuntu Studio because of the added graphic and music software it comes with, included Jack and the real time kernel (I think).
But I fear that it might tread on kxstudio feet, causing maybe conflicts.
Would it be better to start with KUbuntu?
Thanks.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think it makes little sense to install both. You will likely have different program and plugin versions and also the settings might conflict. I would go with ubuntu, kubuntu or whatever (Debian?) and add the KX repos.

If you want to use Plasma then I would recommend Neon instead of Kubuntu. You certainlty won't have any conflicts with that and it's easy enough to install everything in the kxstudio repo (meta packages will give you most).
I think that Ubuntu Studio comes with a low latency kernel rather than a RT kernel, unless something changed in the last year or two. Low latency should be good for a lot of use cases and can be installed form any ubuntu based distro.

Thank you very much for the answers.
I want to stick with Ubuntu because, well, I know it well and it's going to be my primary (only) SO.
If Ubuntu Studio could caouse conflicts I'll add the repos to standard Kubuntu and install the other programs I want later.
I guess the RT kernel can be installed with the KXStudio repos anyway, right?

Sure, but as long you don't need to record many tracks from external instruments at the same time, you likely will not need it.I guess the RT kernel can be installed with the KXStudio repos anyway, right?
Start with the standard kernel of Ubuntu. If you get xruns, try a low latency kernel and if this is still not good for you try a RT kernel. RT kernels can make stability problems, so I only would use it if it's necessary.

Depends if you mean with or from. The answer is yes and no respectively.Tarrasque wrote:

How should I do to install a RT kernel?

What most people use is a low-latency kernel. IIRC what I did was filter packages in Muon with the search string "kernel". That shows you what is installed, and what other options there are. Other package managers mostly work in a similar way. I selected the latest low-latency kernel package, set it to "install", clicked to make the changes.Tarrasque wrote:How should I do to install a RT kernel?
Then reboot the system and see which kernel is running. If it loads the generic kernel instead, then when on the GRUB screen move down the menu to select your distro with other boot options. That should let you select which kernel to start with.
Since my systems like to start with the latest available kernel, I try to make sure that any spare generic kernels I keep are a version or several older than my low-latency one. But I have never needed those, so IMO on a stable system the generic can be safely removed.

Re: Ubuntu Studio or KUbuntu for PPA installation?
Definately Kubuntu,
Because Ubuntu Studio is pretty self sufficient OS, meaning it has been already tuned for optimal audio performance. mixing it with KXStudio audio settings can result in a uncontrollable mess.
Another plus in favor of Kubuntu is that Plasma is technically the default desktop environment of KXStudio. You will have matching QT color theme and matching custom menus to say the least.
As mentioned above you need to add linux-lowlatency kernel and pulseaudio-module-jack in order to sync the both sound systems

It's been a while since I did some audio work with Linux and I remember using a RT kernel at the time was nearly mandatory to have decent results.

Kxstudio doesn't provide a kernel so you can't install it FROM there. However you can install any kernel with kxstudio stuff installed.Tarrasque wrote:Not sure I understood (not a native speaker)sysrqer wrote:Depends if you mean with or from. The answer is yes and no respectively.Tarrasque wrote:

I think avlinux provides kernels that you can install in a Debian based system (Ubuntu, neon etc).
Re: Ubuntu Studio or KUbuntu for PPA installation?
I just installed a plain Kubuntu 18.10 and then added the repository following the procedure here:
https://kxstudio.linuxaudio.org/Repositories
But something strange happens:
ry to install kstudio-meta-all I get a strange error:
The "kxstudio-meta-all" package could not be marked for installation or upgrade:
Depends: kxstudio-meta-all, but it is not installable
