KXstudio wireless problem in 14.04

I have a new wireless modem that uses WPA/WPA2 encryption and I cannot connect to it. . In my efforts to get wireless to work, I now have issues where I need to run WICD to even get a wired connection working which takes some additional time whenever I boot up. And I certainly would like to have wireless working again. I get an error on booting that the system is trying to find the network manager. I can enter the WiFi password, but it will never connect to WiFi. At least I can eventually connect to a wired connection.

I have gone through a couple of procedures including this one and everything looks OK as far as I can tell with wireless, it just won't connect to WPA2
