Cadence: How to use monitor outuputs? Send the audio to monitors only

Post by anton-k »

Hi!

I'm using Focusrite 2x2 audiocard. It has two outputs and one stereo output for monitoring.
I'd like to be able to send the metronome click to monitoring output. So that the audience can
hear only the output of the music in the playback on the speakers but I (armed with headphones) can also hear the metronome click.
But when I open the catia/claudia it shows that the soundcard has only 2 outputs.

Is it possible to somehow root the audio to headphones?
Has anyone tried to accomplish that?

Thanks in advance!
Anton

I don't have one of those but looking it up, it seems that there is only 2 outputs so no separate outputs for headphones.

Exactly.
You would need a Scarlett 2i4 or a similar device for a seperate monitor output. 2i2 means 2 mono channels in, 2 mono channels out. Even though it has a headphone jack, there are no seperate channels for this output on the 2i2.

If you don't need stereo, you could use only the left channel for audio playback and only the right channel for the click.

I've found the way how to do it!
I post it just in case if someone has the same needs...

There is a useful command line tool called alsa_in and alsa_out with it one
can use any attached device as a jack-unit. So I use my external card as
a source of high quality audio (for audience) and I use my laptop's internal
audiocard as a metronome with headphones. This is quite flexible setup
and cheaper than to upgrade to the 2x4 card.

You can read the details on how to do it in this great article:
