Audio was fine yesterday; no audio today

Post by SLCBagpiper »

I'm using an Acer Aspire One netbook with a 2GB RAM card installed. I'm running EXCLUSIVELY Ubuntu 14.04.02 LTS (all traces of Windows are long gone), 3.13.0-57-lowlatency kernel, 32bit architecture, with the KXStudio desktop environment. It's been working brilliantly up until today. As recently as yesterday, I was able to record and play back audio with Audacity as well as with LMMS; audio was working beautifully. I ran in Terminal (Konsole, in my case)

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update
and then

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get upgrade
as I do almost every day. Now, nothing: No audio at all. No inputs nor outputs produce any sound at all. And, unfortunately, I did not save the output in the terminal windows when I ran the latest updates, which I now realize, in retrospect, that I should have; I imagine that such data might help to tell us what went wrong; certainly show us what the updates changed, right?

Yes, I Google-searched for a solution. That's how I discovered this forum, really. I went through the obvious fixes: KMix shows everything un-muted; that was the first thing I tried. There is, however, a new slider on the HDA Intel tab that wasn't there before I did my latest

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update
and

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get upgrade
: PCM.

Re-booting made no difference, either; that was my first attempt at fixing the problem. Nor did multiple re-boots.

So I thought, Maybe I just need to manually connect systemcapture with systemplayback by using Catia. Now, I have a shortcut to Catia both in my Favorites tab on the Kickoff Launcher, as well as on the Panel. But after running the updates like I mentioned above, suddenly clicking on these shortcuts did nothing; Catia would utterly fail to launch. OK, let's try in Terminal:

Code: Select all

catia
; nothing. All right, I thought, maybe it doesn't think I'm root, even though I'm the lone user of this computer, but whatever, so I open a Terminal (Konsole) and type

Code: Select all

sudo catia
, and I got this:

Code: Select all

Error: "/var/tmp/kdecache-<My Username>" is owned by uid 1000 instead of uid 0.
connect(2) call to /dev/shm/jack-0/default/jack_0 failed (err=No such file or directory)
attempt to connect to server failed
Catia comes up with a totally black, blank field on the Canvas section of the window. I click on Tools -> JACK Server -> Start JACK Server, and---nothing. I repeat the exercise and---still nothing. I do this a few times, meanwhile I have the Terminal window still open, and this appears in Terminal when I click Tools -> JACK Server -> Start JACK Server:

Code: Select all

connect(2) call to /dev/shm/jack-0/default/jack_0 failed (err=No such file or directory)
attempt to connect to server failed
connect(2) call to /dev/shm/jack-0/default/jack_0 failed (err=Connection refused)
attempt to connect to server failed
connect(2) call to /dev/shm/jack-0/default/jack_0 failed (err=Connection refused)
attempt to connect to server failed
; one iteration for each time that I try to start JACK by clicking Tools -> JACK Server -> Start JACK Server in Catia.

Maybe turning to Cadence will help. My shortcuts to Cadence no longer launch, either, so I go to trusty Terminal (Konsole), and here's what happens:

Code: Select all

<My Username>@<My Computer Name>:~$ sudo cadence
[sudo] password for <My Username>:
Using Tray Engine 'Qt'
Error: "/var/tmp/kdecache-<My Username>" is owned by uid 1000 instead of uid 0.
"sni-qt/2508" WARN  18:38:36.226 void StatusNotifierItemFactory::connectToSnw() Invalid
,
but a Cadence window opens up all the same. I'm having trouble taking screen-shots as well, so let me describe what's on the Cadence window. I know that this is going to be tedious to read, but please bear with me:

System Information
Operating System: Ubuntu 14.04.02 LTS
Kernel/Version: 3.13.0-57-lowlatency
Architecture: 32bit

System Status
CPU Scaling Governor: ondemand

System Checks
Test Name: ( i ) Result [it's a round blue button with a white lower-case "i" in it; I click on it and nothing happens.]
Current kernel: [green checkmark] 3.13.0 Lowlatency
User in audio group: [x] [it's a red square button with a white "x" in the middle]

In mid-window there's the following info:

JACK Status
Server Status: (/) Stopped [it's got that red circle with the diagonal line through it, the international symbol for "no".]
Realtime: [green checkmark] No
DSP Load: ---
Xruns: ---
Buffer Size: ---
Sample Rate: ---
Block Latency: ---

The buttons immediately below:

[ Start ] [ Stop (which is all grayed out) ] [ Force Restart] [ Configure ]

"Auto-start JACK or LADISH at login"-box is checked.

JACK Bridges
ALSA Audio
Using Cadence snd-aloop daemon, stopped

Two buttons, all grayed out: [ Start ] [ Stop ]
Bridge Type: [ ALSA -> Loop -> JACK ] (the drop-down menu)

ALSA MIDI Tab:
ALSA MIDI Bridge is stopped
Three buttons immediately below:
[ Start (grayed out) ] [ Stop (grayed out) ] [ Export HW ... ]
"Auto-start at login"-box is checked.

PulseAudio Tab:
"PulseAudio is not started"
Two buttons below, all grayed out: [ Start ] [ Stop ]
The "Auto-start at login"-box is NOT checked.

Pop-up info window says "Could not start JACK!"

That's what's on the Cadence window.

did at some point get an info pop-up window that said, "Failed to start JACK, please check the logs for more information."
I was able to open up the logs in Catia, and here's what they had to say:
First, the JACK Log, of which I'm only listing today's entries, since the problem started today:

If you need the data from previous days, when everything worked, then please let me know. I apologize if this is too much information, but I have no way of knowing what's relevant to finding a solution, so I thought it'd be best to include everything from when the problem started.

Now, I DID refer to the KXStudio manual as it appears on sourceforge.com, and ran the terminal commands listed there. I can't recall the order I ran these commands, but here they are along with the Terminal (Konsole) output:

I don't know what else to tell you, and I really hope that this isn't too much information or not enough. At this writing, I've invested about 14 hours in researching a solution. While I don't think that I'm just too cool to learn the system, I do have deadlines for having the stems prepared very fast approaching, and I'd really hate to lose my deposit on the studio booking. So any help would be very greatly appreciated. Given that I just got the effects-banks installed that I'd been looking for and otherwise optimized the system to do what I need it to do, I would really, really, REALLY prefer to not have to re-install and re-update the OS, if that is at all possible.

Thank you in advance for all of your help.

Catia doesnt need to be opened with root privilages so thats not the issue.

Open up cadence and check that jack is started if not start jack and start jack and then start the alsojack bridge.

Maybe Catia doesn't need to be opened in root when it's functioning normally, but typing

Code: Select all

catia
by itself in Terminal did nothing; it was only when I typed

Code: Select all

sudo catia
that I got a response. I already tried to "Open up cadence and check that jack is started if not start jack and start jack and then start the alsojack bridge", but it didn't work; ALSA-JACK Bridge button was and still is grayed out. But I tried it all again, and no joy. Again, clicking on the Cadence icon does nothing; I can only get the Cadence window to open by using Terminal. Here's what happened just now in Terminal:

Code: Select all

<My Username>@<My Computer's Name>:~$ sudo cadence

When the Cadence window finally appears, under JACK Status, when I click on Start, nothing happens. When I click on Force Restart, then I get the Error window: "Could not start JACK!" Jack Status still says "Server Status: Stopped".

What else can we try?

falkTX wrote:Please never open your apps as root like that.
Most apps write config files on close to save the user settings, and if you run them as root they will be saved with root-only permissions.
I'm afraid you just broke Cadence config files and you won't be able to save data on it again.

So now you have to fix that mess first.
Please delete "~/.config/falkTX", "~/.config/Cadence", "~/.config/KXStudio" and "~/.config/jack" folders.

Then run this to reset your audio setup:

Code: Select all

cadence-session-start --reset
And start over by configuring JACK again in Cadence.
(as regular user please!)

Thank you for taking the time to reply.

I'm guessing that the Terminal command to remove the Cadence config files is

Code: Select all

sudo -rm --/some/file/path/name/.config/Cadence
, right? Now, I'm glad that you guys are newbie-friendly, 'cuz I'm really a newbie in most important respects when it comes to Ubuntu and Linux. If I sound like I know what I'm doing, it's because I'm a good mimic at dialects and can sound like I know what I'm doing. I don't know the path to type, but if it helps, when I installed KXStudio, I just installed it in the default locations, whatever those might be. Obviously, I don't type "falkTX"; I'm guessing I'd type "-rm --~/.config/<My Username>" instead. You can see how my use of Terminal commands could certainly use a bit of fine-tuning. Would you please be so kind as to spell out what the proper command is?

I could be mistaken, but it seems like installed programs go to a different directory with each new version of Ubuntu; Google searches seem to always turn up advice for version 11 or 12, or 13, or non-KXStudio 14, none of it useful for KXStudio. So, again, I'm glad that you guys are here and willing to help out. Thanks, again.

I have just a couple of questions more, if you don't mind answering them when you get a chance:
(1) The next time that clicking on the shortcut doesn't launch the program, and just typing the program name in Terminal doesn't launch either, and if launching the program in Terminal as root is unsafe and will break it, then what would be a safe way to open Cadence or Catia in Terminal, or, I guess, any other program?
(2) If I don't copy-and-paste and save the output in the Terminal window when I run "sudo apt-get update" and "upgrade", is there any other way to see what changes were made from one update to another? I'm guessing that the answer is no, but I thought I'd ask anyway, just in case.
(3) I know that you can't take a look at my computer, and so it'd be impossible to tell exactly what went wrong with mine in this case. But is it possible to know what are some of the common causes for audio to just crap out like this, in ways like mine did? And are they at all preventable?

Again, thank you for taking the time to help out like this. All The Best! Slainte!

He actually was very specific in what he told you to do
falkTX wrote: ~/.config/falkTX", "~/.config/Cadence", "~/.config/KXStudio" and "~/.config/jack
~/ is your home so ~/.config is the same as /home/YOU/.config. Just open your file manager and delete these folders or if you really want to use the terminal then 'rm -r ~/.config/falkTX", "~/.config/Cadence", "~/.config/KXStudio" and "~/.config/jack'

However, never use rm unless you understand exactly what it is going to do.

That worked! It's fixed. Thank you all, again!

For the record, for the next guy that this happens to, I opened Terminal and

Code: Select all

<My Username>@<My Computer's Name>:~$ rm -r ~/.config/falkTX
<My Username>@<My Computer's Name>:~$ rm -r ~/.config/Cadence
rm: remove write-protected regular file ‘/home/<My Username>/.config/Cadence/Cadence.conf’? Y
<My Username>@<My Computer's Name>:~$ rm -r ~/.config/KXStudio
<My Username>@<My Computer's Name>:~$ rm -r ~/.config/jack
<My Username>@<My Computer's Name>:~$ cadence-session-start --reset
ERROR:dbus.proxies:Introspect error on :1.11:/org/jackaudio/Controller: dbus.exceptions.DBusException: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.
tryCloseJackDBus() failed
<My Username>@<My Computer's Name>:~$
Catia launched anyway, in spite of that "failed"-mess above, and I clicked "Start" on JACK Status, then "Force Restart". Then I re-booted the computer, KXStudio did its Set-up routine, clicked Next, then Next, then Finish. Opened up an LMMS project; audio works. Opened up an Audacity project; audio works. Went to YouTube; got audio there, too.

I guess we can mark this as solved. Again, thanks for the help, for your patience with a newbie, and for advancing my education about Ubuntu in general, and KXStudio in particular. The day is saved, and I can get on with meeting studio deadlines. Thanks a million! all The Best! Sláinte!

Wondering if this thread might be useful for me once I get the upgrade done (which fingers crossed will in itself solve most of the issues I seem to have) so just a friendly bump really. Glad you got your problem sorted.

Ahh thanks for the pointer. I was wondering the other day what to use when I found gksu wasn't installed :)
