Use hot keys for volume control

Post by paul »

Hello!

I have a ThinkPad, which has on the keyboard some special keys for volume up, down, and mute. The problem is: they don't work. I have no idea whether it is a Linux or Jack issue..but they would be extremely useful for live use, since I don't always have my external interface with me.
Is there a way to make them work? I'm pretty sure many people could use these.

(By the way, the "brightness" keys also do not work, while the "activate/deactivate wifi" does.)

Thanks!

The hot keys are an X11 issue. Hitting keys sends specific keycodes which X interprets. I could not find a concise explanation of all this, but this thread in one place to start: http://askubuntu.com/questions/243751/h ... ate-action. Also I would google for you specific laptop model, someone may have fix. For my Thinkpad W530, these keys have worked automatically.

I'm started to think it's more of a Jack issue: if in the standard KMix shortcuts I add some custom key combinations to raise/lower the volume, they *also* do not work!

I have a similar issue with Dell Latitude 3550: brightness controls don't work (under Ubuntu they do) but volume buttons work fine. Maybe it's related.
