Reinstalling kx studio ububtu 12.04 or 14.04?

My system is getting glitchy from random stuff I have done to it. I'm thinking about reinstalling kx studio. i looked on the kxstudio home page seems addind the repos has changes a little bit. Can I install the repos over ubuntu 14.04 64 or should I use ubuntu 12.04. I know people are going to say I can just use the kxstudio iso. Personal preferance though I like how ubuntu is set up and I use unity 2d for a fast desktop invoirment. I have found it faster and less glitchy than lxde and others. Like I said just a personal preferance.

I've been testing Mint 17-RC(14.04), and on the surface it seems as stable as my 12.04 system, but haven't had time to test every single thing in my workflow. The question you have to ask yourself is, are there features in 14.04 that makes your life easier and better in your workflow? 12.04 is a proven stable OS. 14.04 seems to be, but may still have underlying problems that haven't been recognized yet. Seems to be a 50/50 proposition to me. I'm still up in the air on switching my primary partition to a 14.04 base. My 12.04 base works great, and if it ain't broke don't fix it, but it doesn't seem like anything is any more/less broken in 14.04 than in 12.04 with kxstudio repos.

Do you really need the newer packages 14.04 offers? I posted some benchmarks Phoronix did recently of 12.04 vs 14.04 and 12.04 won in most tests so not only is it likely more stable but it performs slightly better, sadly enough.

Having a second look, there's really not much in it. Also, Phoronix is mainly concerned with graphics performance.

One thing we can say for sure is 12.04 has had more testing so should be more stable in some cases and if you have really new hardware you may need to go with 14.04.

That's why I asked. I have newer hardware I' have about a 5 year out of date gaming pc type set up. I'm not so concerned about bench marks for graphics. If everyone suggests 12.04 That's what I will go with thanks.

At the same time, I feel like the 3.15 recent low latency kernel works great on 14.04. If low-latency is your destination. I might go that way, and I'm starting to think 14.04. Benchmarking is about 50/50 and in the long run there will be more development and refinement of 14.04 from here on out.

Well as long as the install instructions and the repositorys work for both I should be ok. I might try dual booting having one distro for just music stuff and one for all the other stuff I do like the internet and netflix. I'm not reinstalling today so i'll try waiting a bit unless I have to and I'll see how it goes.

Just updated this kx upgrade guide today. Works with almost any debian,12.04, or 14.04 install.

my pc is slightly older than that and any past 3.11 doesnt work. system locks up a few minutes after login.

amd athlon 64 dual core 64 bit.

My laptop which is a core 2 duo 32 bit though seems to work fine with 3.15 except clemantine will just stop playing and then lock up.

im sticking with 12.04

if you look at the ubuntu forums general section alone there are a bunch of posts with issues on 14.04

oh and whats this sticky
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2217536
Sticky Thread Sticky: [ubuntu] 14.04 (Trusty Tahr) known bugs and work arounds

says it all

ive been using ubuntu now for over 6 years full time, and what happens every time i have switched to the newest distro. Spend ages trying to fix stuff that was working perfectly before i moved.

Juat intalled 14.04 twice actually. Seems a bit buggier than 12.04 was.Haven't installed the kxstudio repos yet. i;m still working things out but it's going pretty good. On either repo install guides I don't see anything about a low latency kernal? Was wondering about how to install that. The have always seemed to of worked well for me.

You can get the low-latency kernel:
Stable:http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/ma ... 14-trusty/
or
Nightly Builds(what I'm using):http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/daily/

In either case download the linux-headers....all.deb, linux-headers..low-latency..amd64(or i386).deb, and linux-image..low-latency..deb

Open a terminal. cd in whatever folder you downloaded the .deb files to. Unpack them in the order I told you to download them with:

Code: Select all

sudo dpkg -i linux-headers-3.14.0-031400_3.14.0-031400.201403310035_all.deb
sudo dpkg -i linux-headers-3.14.0-031400-lowlatency_3.14.0-031400.201403310035_amd64.deb
sudo dpkg -i linux-image-3.14.0-031400-lowlatency_3.14.0-031400.201403310035_amd64.deb
Then restart, and grub should give you the option to boot the new kernel.

Whats the command line for 12.04 getting the 3.8 low latency kernal? I'm going to have to go back to that. I installed the kx studio repos and jack wont start. I go into cadence try starting it there and it tells me there is and error check logs. Then I click force restart and jack starts but The sound coming out of my m audio 1010 is all destorted and I am getting constant xruns. Just not going to work for me right now. Need my system up and running and 12.04 is rock solid for recording.

I didn't know a low-latency kernel was sill in the kx repos. Good to know! As for your troubles with 14.04 my setupd with a 1010 is actually running better(xrun wise) under 14.04 with the 3.15 low-latency kernel than my 12.04 with 3.8. I've got my buffer at 128, and everything so far is solid as a rock. Unfortunately all hardware is different, and mileage will vary. GL getting rock solid!

Figured it was a good time to upgrade my computer more ram and another 128gb of ssd while i'm doing everything. i'm a bit slow I am installing the packaged low latency kernal right now. If that doesn't work out I'll try the daily builds. if that doesn't work out I'll go back to 12.04 with the 3.8. I'll get back to you all thanks for the help so far.
