M'aidez! M'aidez!
Ok, KXStudio is installed and running well.
Now, how do I get the sound to work? I can get the test sounds out, but nothing else.

Hey,
I'm too green to be of much help, but if you put some details in your signature it'll speed things up as far as getting answers. Are you using an outboard audio device?

Thank you!
I have created my signature (I thought I had already). Hopefully, it will help those In the know coach me into their numbers.

Re: M'aidez! M'aidez!
So what test sounds are these? How did you play them?
Which sound device are you trying to use, on board or firewire mixer?
If the later, have you configured jack in Cadence?
If your firewire mixer was plugged in and turned on before you booted into KXStudio do you get a mixer app when you open sound & video> hardware configuration> FFado Mixer?

Re: M'aidez! M'aidez!
What are your JACK connections? (see the JACK connections in Catia)
And what device is your master sound device? (see this information in Cadence > System > Configure)
If you heard sound once or twice with the test tones, my guess is that it's simply a setting that needs changed.
Better minds than mine are here and with more experience, but that's where I'd look first if I were to sit down at your machine.

I'm guessing you're referring to the test tones in kmixer... Which hints at a few things I could suggest, but I'll wait and see, because I wrote a long post, but then everyone else basically asked the same things

Re: M'aidez! M'aidez!
OK, I was, as I am now, posting from my Windows laptop. I will answer the configuration questions from the KX machine.
Thank you so much for your responses thus far! I am sure you will help me get this thing running so well, that I may be tempted to change this machine over to KX as well.

Re: M'aidez! M'aidez!
Under Cadence - System - Configure - Driver- ALSA I have under the Device section:
Device/Interface: hw:0
Input Device: none
Output Device: none
Input Channels: 0
Output Channels:0
Duplex Mode is checked.
The remaining boxes are not checked.
Under Cadence - System - Configure - Driver- Dummy:
Input Ports: 2
Output ports: 2
Everything else in the device section is grayed out except the Monitor option which is unchecked.
Under Cadence - System - Configure - Driver- FireWire:
Device/Interface: hw:0
Capture ports: no
Playback ports: no
Input channels:0
Output channels: 0
Duplex Mode is checked.
All other options under Device are grayed out.
There are no settings for Loopback, Net and NetOne.
Ringing any bells? All of mine are being serviced.

Re: M'aidez! M'aidez!
If you click on the (small, downward pointing) arrow just to the right ofI don't know which is my Master Device.
Under Cadence - System - Configure - Driver- ALSA I have under the Device section:
Device/Interface: hw:0
Input Device: none
Output Device: none
Input Channels: 0
Output Channels:0
Duplex Mode is checked.
The remaining boxes are not checked.
Device/Interface: hw:0
you should see a list of possible master audio interfaces/devices.
Right now,
hw:0
is showing up as the selected master audio interface. Your task is to ascertain what interfaces are recognized by Cadence, and determine also which interface is the firewire interface you wish to use.
This would be where I would start.

Re: M'aidez! M'aidez!
So lets see what is loaded on your system:
open a terminal window and type: aplay -l
and post the results. Then type: dmesg | grep -i firewire
and post the results.
Also look in synaptic and see if you have these packages installed (quickfilter ffado):
jackd-firewire
ffado-tools
ffado-mixer-qt4
ffado-dbus-server
libffado2

Re: M'aidez! M'aidez!
Are you looking in Cadence > System > Configure > Driver tab, looking at ALSA settings?----> There is nothing there. No options are available. What did I screw up?
At the left, you can select to look at or change settings for:
ALSA
Dummy
Firewire
Loopback
Net
NetOne
What are your Device/Interface options available for ALSA that appear when you click on the small downward pointing arrow just to the right of hw:0?
Note: If you change anything, in order to activate the change, you need to click on
Switch Master!
button at Cadence > System tab.
At this point, if I changed anything here, I would log out and restart the computer and check the settings again to be sure of the change.
Note Also: is
User in Audio group:
checked YES?

Re: M'aidez! M'aidez!
Your "master device" is the device jack regards as its master, ie, the device it is sending sound to.
Your master device is the selected device on the selected-driver screen in the Cadence Jack-configure "Driver" tab. If you are using Firewire, make sure that "Firewire" is highlighted on the left, and that the firewire config screen is visible when you close that screen. You cannot, for instance, fill in the Firewire config, and think, oh, I'll just look at the ALSA tab, and leave it with the ALSA tab selected. You can just look at the other tabs and then return to the one you want to use.
Change Master button switches between two different audio interface configurations without stopping Jack. This button has only materialised very recently. Otherwise you must restart jack to get it running with new parameters.
You are using a firewire device? What happens if you run the FFADO mixer? Does it recognise your device?
What's in the Cadence logs? Hit the purge button, restart your machine and look again --- that way, you know you are only looking at one logged start up, and odn't have to search for the beginning of this instance.

Better to test this feature once the card is known to work. Until then, I'd recommend using Stop and Start.luster wrote: Note: If you change anything, in order to activate the change, you need to click on
