package building

You all know, there are packages which you really like, but are not in you favorite distro or are not up to date.
Would be good if people are able to build packages themselves in the right way... So you can maintain you favorite package for your favorite distro.

For Ubuntu I found some good video tutorials:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MOTU/Videos

And a documentation:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PackagingGuide/Complete

EDIT: I see some packages are up to date in the development release (now jaunty), so it could be useful in such cases to make a backport:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Ubunt ... 20packages
and a simple way to make backport packages:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=268687

for Debian:
http://www.debian.org/doc/maint-guide/

I hope this inspires people to learn package building and improve distros for making music.. :)
