Libre Music Challenge #12 : Back In Time #2 (80's edition) : Synths and Waves! !

Hello all Fellows,

The Libre Music Challenge continues his living and gets its 2nd Back In Time edition!

The Libre Music Challenge is an event that originated in the chat server run by producer/musician/youtuber Unfa.
In this challenge we use only free audio software and some general rules apply (check viewtopic.php?p=120524#p120524)

I think this time we could have fun with synths this month,
So in this month the challenge we will have is to make some 80ish synthwave or newwave using wavetable synths.

All music must be made using only FLOSS/Libre audio software .
All melodic sound source used in your track must be made using wavetable synth(s) only , all Fx are allowed.
About drums, use samples if you prefer, if using wavetable synths too, you will gain 10% scoring :)

Well, that's it. Good luck and I look forward to hearing your submissions and reading about how you did it.

Submit before midnight (24:00) 09-27-2021 (27th September GMT)

You can submit tracks by posting links to your work in this thread. Make sure the audio is downloadable and mp3 or ogg (cause the FLAC is too long to upload :( ) as all tracks will be posted on archive.org. (link will follow)

Good luck and if you have questions, don't hesitate to ask.
tl;dr
Make a 80'ish synthwavetrack using a free DAW and plugins / melodies must sound from a wavetable synth , drums from whatever you want (Floss obv :D) but will be given a reward of 10% if they are coming from a wavetable synth.
Please
Submit before midnight (24:00) 09-27-2021 (27th September GMT)

Here is the Archive.org page where to listen all subs together :

Sounds good, can someone recommend a wavetable synth vst or lv2?

I think Vital/Vitalium may be the master, but i like to use ODIN2 on my side and i think it has wavetable and all filters to sound vintage.
Lmms has a built in one, cant recall name right now, sorry.

I think there are enough in the FLOSS world to let us achieve this challenge :mrgreen:

Surge also has many wavetables baked-in, although they are not customizeable, does it count for this challenge?

Also, just to make sure, do you *have* to use only the wavetable oscillators in the eligible wavetable synths, or is using their other oscillators (simple saw, sine, square etc.) allowed as well?

If that's the case that probably means I'll beto using Surge and Vital, mostly Surge since it has some quite nice vintage sounds ^^

idk , would be too easy then?

The use of wavetable synth just came as a word joke with the wave word :mrgreen: , i will better have to reread how wavetable works :mrgreen:

Tbh would be better to use wavetable only .

Okay! So just to recap the rules to be extra sure:

- Any synth that features a WaveTable oscillator can be used as a sound source (examples: Vital, Surge, Odin II, Calf Wavetable, etc.), but *only* the WaveTable oscillators can be used (if the synth has other oscillator types, like Odin, Surge or Vital).
- Drums can use samples, but there's an extra 10% bonus if the drums are synthesized using the WaveTables cited above.

Is that correct?

In any case, that seems fun! I'm gonna try to synthesize drums using wavetables now! ^^

More clarifications on what is meant by a "wavetable" synthesizer. I tend to build a lot of my synths from scratch (all FOSS), so I'd like to know the limits.

The core of a wavetable synthesizer is what I would call a table-lookup oscillator, which consists of a wavetable containing a sample period, and a phasor signal reading through this table at a particular frequency.

Depending on how you process the phasor signal, you can get hard sync and phase distortion synthesis. Both of these are very characteristic to the 80s synth sound, and would be very convenient to use. Would this be allowed?

Wavetable morphing is a pretty common thing in most wavetable synths. Would this be allowed?

Looking forward to trying this challenge out!

For those who like to follow insane rules (couldn't be a better time, right? [yes, I mean exactly that]), here the list of Odin2 presets that only use wavetable oscilators:
  1. Arps & Sequences -> Modular Mess 2
  2. Chimes -> Chimes [Photonic]
  3. Chimes -> PRC GlassHit
  4. Chiptune -> Bagpipe Tune
  5. Keys -> Metallic Keys [XR]
  6. Keys -> Piano Ballad 3
  7. Leads -> Glide Comb Lead
  8. Organ -> Church Organ
  9. Pads -> sounds like a melody
  10. Pads -> Synae XY [RS]
  11. Stabs -> Gurgles dirty

For a less stringent yet still sufficiently restricting rule, if one includes MultiOSC (which is really just another wavetable oscillator) in Odin2 as well as WavetableOSC, then the preset list grows to
  1. Arps & Sequences -> Modular Mess 2
  2. Arps & Sequences -> RandArpChords (NW)
  3. Atmospheres -> Orbitalesque Stabs [4T]
  4. Chimes -> Chimes [Photonic]
  5. Chimes -> Glass Harp A slow
  6. Chimes -> PRC GlassHit
  7. Chiptune -> Bagpipe Tune
  8. Instruments -> Chinese Steel [4T-RS]
  9. Keys -> Metallic Keys [XR]
  10. Keys -> Piano Ballad 3
  11. Keys -> SynKeys 3XY
  12. Leads -> Glide Comb Lead
  13. Leads -> Random Voices
  14. Organ -> Church Organ
  15. Organ -> Organ Tremolo
  16. Pads -> Choir Aahs 1 [RS]
  17. Pads -> Darken Nature [RM]
  18. Pads -> Haunt [RM]
  19. Pads -> sounds like a melody
  20. Pads -> Synae XY [RS]
  21. Pads -> Voices
  22. SFX -> FX Jump [RM]
  23. Stabs -> Chinese Ow [4T-RS]
  24. Stabs -> Gurgles dirty
One might ask "can I use wave drawing oscillators then?" and I would ask back "can you look at yourself in the mirror?".
