KXstudio i'm experiencing some problems..
Hi all, I recently upgraded my ubuntu 10.04 audio system to full kxstudio (gnome) - i was using only some PPA's but i thought it could have been better adding the others, and it is. Apps like klaudia, claudia etc are GREAT! I'm using reltime kernel right now, i get some xruns here and there (mainly with MIDI) but it's fine; my system is: AMD phenom II X6 3.2 GHz, RAM 4 GB, nvidia gt220, and as audio interface i'm with an M-audio fast track USB - i'd like to upgrade to a delta, maybe 1010 in some time.
So, there are some problems i cannot seem to solve:
1) I can't open alsamixer. I tried to reinstall ALSA and alsa-utils, everything is here (links, libraries, etc) but it says "no such file or directory". I found no solution online, so maybe you can help me..
2) Qtractor loads but crashes in like 1 sec..tried both the standard and SVN version, no way it can go. I had it working for some time..
3) Sometimes the fast track does not load at startup, and this means jack does not load and it's quite annoying.
4) Sometimes i get problems with MIDI - using zynadd or some other app causes xruns at some point and the sound starts crackilng and i have to kill jackdbus in order to get everything back together working.
5) So, sometimes i have then to restart jack. If i do this with jack2simpleconfig it goes ok, but if i do this from qjackcontrol klaudia does not load saying that jack is not started - but it doesn't happend all the times. Plus, settings for jack are not the same in jack2simpleconfig and qjackcontrol - if i change something in one program the other one does not change.
Hope you can help me..I'd rather not reinstall the whole thing.

Re: KXstudio i'm experiencing some problems..
Thank you Falk, you're incredibly fast for support!
So, here we go.
1) You won't belive this, but when i typed this:
After reeading the output i typed alsamixer and it appeared. It didn't show for like a week..LOL. Solved!
2)
Well, seems you were right. What to do then?
3) I just don't know. It's USB and it still gets powered when i shut down the PC but not power off the power supply - but switching it off or leaving it on doesn't matter, for what i have seen. Legacy disabled, didn't change a thing. Changed USB port, same. On another Ubuntu installation on the same PC - natty - happens too so i guess it's some kernel problem, but don't know. I rarely use the interface with the standard ubuntu installation, so i had never noticed it was loaded totally random. By the way, when it doesn't load i get some error messages at startup with RT kernel (and if i have to say i get always some error message about ACPI index not assigned or already assigned).
4) This is strange. Maybe i have some unusual problem with the ALSA driver, as the mixer didn't want to be loaded. It happens with ordinary latency - 256 period buffer; ardour and other non-midi programs do not give me particular xruns (if not while loading some terrible project) at the same settings, don't know why.
5) Well, I'll use the other programs to start jack. And this is solved too
So, here we go.

Qtractor doesn't work for me either in KX Studio. However my output if different:

Re: KXstudio i'm experiencing some problems..
Well, falk will know
So, here's how it continues:
2) ok, it starts nicely but i had to remove the plugin metapackages - can it be a problem for updates?
3) I tried to disable the internal soundcard and it happend - one time in 4 reboots, so i re-enabled it. The fast track is a small soundcard, but it's very useful for recording guitar and bass to the PC. Well, if i logout right after boot plugging it out then in again, everything is fine. I run after doing this so it should not be the main problem behind point 4...or not? Also, here's my output of the rtirq thing:
Here's lsusb
And there's federico@federico-studio:~$ cat /proc/asound/cards
i assume my soundcard is on bus 5, irq 18. It has priority 75 i suppose, so what should i do to give it like 81? Can this be a contribute to problem 4?

I think this will do the trick:It has priority 75 i suppose, so what should i do to give it like 81?
Edit /etc/default/rtirq and change the order of "snd" and "usb" in RTIRQ_NAME_LIST, so that usb audio devices have greater priority than pci audio devices.
Re: KXstudio i'm experiencing some problems..
Thanks all! Pablo, i did it and seems ok but i still get some xruns with midi wich i suppose shouldn't be here. Well, i'll let you know when i'll have time.

Re: KXstudio i'm experiencing some problems..
So, I have to say that now my system is way more stable than before and i've got everything working well - as for now no strange crashes.
one thing that is some strange is the behaviour of fluidsynth, sometimes the standalone doesn't output sound..then at some point you get it. Did anyone experince this?

Re: KXstudio i'm experiencing some problems..
So, double post. I have experienced some crashes with rosegarden using sineshaper - it gives xrun and crashes when loaded in rosegarden. I updated today some stuff, and i reinstalled and the meta's i removed previously then removed again the naspro...just to be shure. Oh, and ubufox seems to have some issues after updating to firefox 5 - i simply removed it, but i just thought i let you know falk.

My laptop detect "c-media USB audio" on volume control, but when I select it, I still have got the sound on the internal speakers. Pablo, I tried your trick; now when I plug the USB speakers in the volume control selects "c-media USB audio (Alsa mixer)" automatically, but sill no sound there...
Using KXstudio 11.04 Unity
Thanks and sorry for my english...
Re: KXstudio i'm experiencing some problems..
Are you working with jack? You should select the right interface in jack settings and not in pulseaudio.

Ok, thanks, but I'm a kind of ignorant...
Thanks and please be patient... I hope to be better with music than with the computer
I know this, but what must I configure in Cadence to get the USB speakers working? There are not in the "Device" list on the "Driver" tab... musted be there?falkTX wrote:Yes, in KXStudio JACK is used as "audio master", and all other audio apps will output to it.
Once JACK is configured properly (use 'Cadence'), you'll then have sound in all apps output to the right place.
