Rhodes sounds

Post by studio32 »

Hi,

What is the best free Rhodes sound?

I know zynaddsubfx has some and I downloaded this soundfont:

http://www.learjeff.net/sf/sf.html

More good Rhodes sounds? Maybe one for LinuxSampler?

edit: found this one on the linuxaudio malinglist archive

I'm convinced learJeff Rhodes is the best "free as beer" option and has been that for years.

It has five velocity layers. It really is important to have several layers because a Rhodes sounds completely different when you hit the keys hard and when you hit them soft. You're definitely going to need at least three layers with a Rhodes sound.

The best non-free option is probably the Pianoteq Rhodes (MKI, MKII). Because of it, I really don't bother playing my real Rhodes MKI much anymore (I actually have the Rhodes in my living room and play Pianoteq Rhodes in my "studio room").

learJeff Rhodes needs a good amount of reverb though.

Yoshimi's multi_timbral layers are great for recreating E Pianos. Add some barely audible pluk with envelope tail,
to get a tine, and perhaps some noises that are like rhodes flaws. Sorting and layering the many yoshimi e pianos sounds will help.

The wavetable synth Vital should be checked. Probably dozens of quality e-pianos created from
quality wavetables in the last year or two.

Dexed is a DX7 project, but imports historic sysex files, which can offer a useful vantage point
to get particular sounds going.

The DecentSampler project has quite a few soundsets relating to e-pianos, and some good
for enhancing a rhodes style sound.
Cheers

I went through a similar search not long ago and really liked the MDA ePiano.

A stereo rhodes with velocity layers. In sfz format (LinuxSampler, Sforzando, etc).

Another option is Production Voices' "Electric V Le"
https://www.productionvoices.com/product/electric-v-le/

It is 'designed' for the Plogue sforzando player (via yabridge/WINE?) (In Windows, I dragged and dropped an XML file into the sforzando GUI which gives a custom instrument interface). There are also sfz files included in the download (i.e. 'Electric V Standard.sfz') that work with sfizz (at least on Windows...)

Pianoteq is also an option. Not free software or cheap, but rather good and native linux. Jeff_g's is stereo rhodes pretty good too.

With quick search, I could not find place to download it?

It's the first one on the list (jRhodes[...] by learjeff).

I tried the learJeff soundfont in Linux Sampler and every so often I get clicks at the start of a note. It seems similar to the problem
@bluebell had in this thread :

viewtopic.php?p=53669#p53669

Anyone else getting clicks?
