"Studio" vs. Normal Distributions

What other apps and distros do you use to round out your studio?

Hi,

To clarify AV Linux currently comes with a default 2.6.36 'lowlatency' Kernel to take advantage of the recent FireWire developments on the new stack and allow plug and play operation of FFADO supported devices. If you are someone like Autostatic who needs an -rt Kernel there are optional post-install -rt Kernels built for AV Linux that will utilize the included 'rtirq' bootup script. The default is the most user-friendly but hardcore users always have the -rt option.

Hi, and thanks for the explanation.
Concerning the plug and play: that would be an awesome goal. So far however I have not managed to get my Audiofire12 (fully supported by FFado) working...

Hi,

There are some AudioFire users on the AV Linux forum and they report it working, One user reported 2 Audiofires daisy-chained working off the LiveDVD 'plug and play' as well. To be clear the version of FFADO that came with AV Linux 4.2 had a known bug affecting MIDI Ports on Audiofire devices showing up as Audio ports but the Debian pkg-multimedia guys have put up a fixed version in experimental which can be installed to fix that issue. Hi,

So this is with AV Linux 4.2?

I'm no expert but I wonder if there is a firmware update that needs doing on your device. I think you'd be best off asking at ffado.org since they write the drivers. You may also want to come over to the AV Linux forum where the other Audiofire users can help you. I don't have that actual device myself, I'm just going by the forum reports.

Hi Gmaq,
yes it is with avlinux4.2-liqx-lxde-i386-en I have been adviced to do a firmware update before but I am so new to this stuff that I do not know how to do it. Th echo user forum where I intended to ask is down but I might indeed come over to the AV Linux.
Thanks for the help!

Interesting to read on the Musix site http://www.musix.org.ar/FAQs-en.html
it is well known that Gnome and KDE are not suitable for JACK audio work
What is the overhead of running those desktops compared with one of the lighter ones?

I can appreciate you don't really want lots of extra processes running in the background when recording. For audio work I wouldn't expect you need the extra facilities you would get from KDE or Gnome.

My current plan is to install KXStudio to dual boot with Kubuntu as the rest of the family are used to using that. Then I can keep the audio system fairly minimal.

I've not actually done Linux/Linux dual boot. I assume I can have them use the same swap partition. I need to split my current, big data partition to make a new one for KX. What's the best way to do that? Anything else I should consider?

Update: I've now installed KX and that went very smoothly apart from it not setting up GRUB. sub update-grub fixed that. Hope to find time to play with KX in the next few days.

the firmware is the right version now but it still does not work. So I changed back to Ubuntu since AVL kept crashing.

If you reverted to Ubuntu, try the KXStudio upgrade. You will thak yourself for doing so!
