How long has AVLinux been around?

What other apps and distros do you use to round out your studio?

How long has AVLinux been around?

Post by khz »

According to distrowatch since 2011 - it starts with version 5.0.
I think I remember that you @GMaq were one of the first to build his / a LAW. Was it in the year ~2006 or earlier?
Jackd came out around 2002 according to Wikipedia, so the beginnings of Linux & Audio. :D
wikipedia wrote:JACK was developed by a community of open-source developers led by Paul Davis (who won an Open Source Award in 2004 for this work)[3] and has been a key piece of infrastructure and the de facto standard for professional audio software on Linux since its inception in 2002.
What you do and what knowledge you have acquired is great!

Haha!

Even I have forgotten exactly... Version 1.0 was based on Ubuntu Studio 7.10 "Gutsy Gibbon" probably late 2007... Then version 2.0 started with Debian Etch (when it was in Testing) around 2009 or so and then on from there. It has been a road with many zigs and zags and I still have a LOT to learn..

You've made a lot of positive contributions to Linux & Audio IMHO, thanks for that! :D
Ideally, you will continue to learn with pleasure until the end of your life. The development goes on and on ... .

Further note..

I was far from the first to prepare and Distribute a 'LAW'. A very rough timeline that will surely miss some projects and going from memory of other projects I am aware of would go in order of appearing something like this:

1. 64Studio based on Debian
2. Dynebolic based on Slackware
3. JackLab based on OpenSUSE
4. Ubuntu Studio based on Ubuntu
5. AV Linux based on Ubuntu, then later Debian
6. MusiX based on Debian
7. KXStudio based on Ubuntu
8. Gentoo Studio based on Gentoo
9. Tango Studio based on Debian...?
10. LibraZik based on Debian

I'm sure there are others but I think those would be the highlights..

*EDIT.. Ooops forgot the Fedora/RPM-based CCRMA project which is more a specialized set of repos like the current KXStudio and GeekOSDAW projects

And you're the only one left. Are you some sort of Highlander?

Yes, one of the first includes that there were others. But you were among the first.

Timely... Just re-watched that about a month ago...

"There can be only one!"

Luckily there are more than one... If the LAW world was left in my hands alone that would be a sad state of affairs.
