sox OR sndfile-resample

What other apps and distros do you use to round out your studio?

sox OR sndfile-resample

Post by Chipfryer »

Hi folks. Rosegarden keeps asking for either of the above files for re-sampling.
Synaptic tells me that both are apparently installed but it just keeps asking.

Also in Ardour I get the following
[ERROR]: cannot set broadcast info for audio file /home/USER/Collector/interchange/Collector/audiofiles/mix-1%L.wav (No Error.); dropping broadcast info for this file
[ERROR]: cannot set broadcast info for audio file /home/USER/Collector/interchange/Collector/audiofiles/mix-1%R.wav (No Error.); dropping broadcast info for this file

All I am trying to do is import a wav file so I can rewrite a drum track from Hydrogen. :D

Audacity loads the wave just fine and playback is very good.
Any idea please?

Many thanks.

Try to execute sox from command line, if you cannot, then it's not well installed or it's not in the path (not so probable). Try to uninstall the packages. Then re-install again with the following command:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install libsox0 libsox-* libsndfile1 libsndfile1-dev sndfile-programs
(you can search for all the packages related to a given keyword with the apt-cache command:

Code: Select all

apt-cache search sox
apt-cache search sndfile
)
Let us know if it worked. Report any problems if not.

Good luck,

Gerard.

Hi Yeri/Gerard thanks again.
Should I uninstall from package manager/Synaptic? If not what syntax do I need to uninstall from Terminal please? I see libsndfile1 is there, is that the one I need if Sox is not available please?

Thanks again, big help.

Ran:
sudo apt-get install libsox0 libsox-* libsndfile1 libsndfile1-dev sndfile-programs

Got:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Package libsox0 is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
E: Package libsox0 has no installation candidate

Ran:
apt-cache search sox

Got:
acorn-fdisk - Partition editor for Acorn/RISC OS machines
cplay - A front-end for various audio players

Replace libsox0 by libsox1 in the apt-get install command.
For the moment don't uninstall anything.. try first the above and let's see if it works.
For your information, to uninstall from command line, use 'sudo apt-get remove <package-name>'

Hi Gerard.
Nope.

I used:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install libsox1 libsox-* libsndfile1 libsndfile1-dev sndfile-programs
To install libsox1 and it seemed to install just fine. However on opening Rosegarden I still see that message stating Sox/snd is not installed.
I did reboot since I've noticed sometimes this helps.

No worries I get done in Audacity what I needed to get done so all is well. There is a lot to digest too in any case.

Thanks again Gerard for your time.
Best.

Hi Gerard.
No, no.... You've been of fantastic help truly. :D
I'm loving this I truly am.

It could be something in my config file since I don't use 64Studio/UbuntuStudio applications. I wanted to do this the hard way :D
That's how you learn right?

Thanks very much and when this is over (My Stuff). I'll be back.
Sincerely, thanks very much for your help, I am truly grateful to you and others here too.

Keep well Gerard. :)

I had another dig at this since it still tells me the same thing.

I read that it is a common problem using the version from Synaptic and that upgrading to the latest svn would make rosegarden see Sox?
From this link here:
http://www.rosegardenmusic.com/wiki/stable_from_svn

I used:
sudo apt-get install subversion

Then:
svn checkout https://rosegarden.svn.sourceforge.net/ ... stable_1_7
It seemed to load fine but on looking through sound and Video on Linux Mint (7) it isn't listed.

Version 10 (Alpha) is coming out soon I hear? I just find Ardour a bridge too far, worse than Sonar/Cakewalk in fact. So far Windows Cubase and Linux Rosegarden seem to me at least to be logical. After all I'm not a Studio engineer, I just want to publish my stuff in as good a way as possible without going through a million hurdles. Writing is bad enough.

Anyway I thought I'd publish my findings to date on this for other folks seeking info too.
Best regards.

Hi Chipfryer!

With that svn checkout you are just dowloading the source code of Rosegarden, you are not installing it!

First compile, then install, as explained in the README and INSTALL files. In short, navigate to the directory where you have the source code. You can use nautilus and then open a terminal with the right click, as long as you have installed 'nautilus-open-terminal'. Or else use 'cd' to this directory. Then type:

$./configure

And you will probably encounter some errors that some packages were not found. This can be very headscratching if you don't know how to do it. Anyway, it is easier doing it than explaining it. This is an example:

./configure
...
checking lirc/lirc_client.h usability... no
checking lirc/lirc_client.h presence... no
checking for lirc/lirc_client.h... no
configure: error: Failed to find required LIRC header lirc/lirc_client.h

Here you need:
liblircclient-dev

Run the script again:

./configure
...
checking for makedepend... no
configure: error: Failed to find required makedepend program.

Here you need:
xutils-dev

(I know because I did a synaptic search "makedepend" and 'xutils-dev' showed up)

These are real examples from a recent Rosegarden 10.02 beta installation, but your case can be different. In you case you will need a lot of packages if this is the first time you complie something. The README and/or INSTALL files should tell you the needed dependencies.

Oh wait, you can use:

sudo apt-get build-dep rosegarden

this will install most or all needed dependencies for 1.7 svn version

You have to run './configure' until there are no errors.

Then you do:
$make
And, once compilation is completed (some long minutes)
$sudo make install

And you have it.

There are other audio-midi sequencers like qtractor that you can install from synaptic and try.
Rosegarden beta 10.02 is available in the Rosegarden site. You can consider building it from source, now that you know (more or less) how to do it!

Cheers! Pablo

Hi Pablo
Thanks very much.

I'll look through it and get back. This was explained but the 'head scratching' bit really made me laugh :D
Thanks very much indeed.

Pablo. Just saying Hi.
I did try this today but I think the repo was moved temporarily? I got some errors when trying to access it.
Will let you and other know as and when I get it and what if any problems there are when I find them which might be helpful for others too?

Anyway thanks again.

Hi!

Weird. Try again. Make sure the URL is correct. No problem here.

I suggest you try thorn (10.02). It is a beta but more than usable, I would say. It looks nicer than 1.7 series. dssi-vst wrapper doesn't work for me though.

If you scratch your head for too long :D, the best way to get help is through IRC, combining it with pastebin and imagebin.

/join #linuxmusicians
(I am not there often but anyone can help)
Else:
/join #linuxmint
Even people who doesn't know what the flip Rosegarden is can help you with compiling it. Then you will realise how easy it really is.

By the way, you did a very good choice. Linux Mint is one of the best distros to get going with Linux, in my opinion. But once you know the Linux basics, if you feel you want to focus on audio and music applications more than anything else, I suggest you do distrohoping again for a week or two, with the specialised distros, and compare. Then choose, then enjoy doing music.

Thanks very much again Pablo.
Could have been a connection thing? I know it said to use http instead of https at one point. Thanks for the pointer on compiling. I really do need to nail this because, well.............. I'm missing out hahaha
Thanks again pablo, stay well.
