AVL MXE or Ubuntu Studio on a Mac Mini

What other apps and distros do you use to round out your studio?

AVL MXE or Ubuntu Studio on a Mac Mini

Post by Toejam76 »

I am a bit confused (more than usual). I have a Mac Mini (late 2012) lying around and want to install Linux on it.
It has a Intel I5 cpu, but the isos are for AMD. Wouldn't I need a X86 iso for the Mac and can I just put the iso on a USB stick and boot it like on PC?

The label amd64 is a historic artifact, it goes back to the days when Intel and AMD were developing two different competing 64 bit processor architectures. It's a bit confusing, but the i5 processor came around much later and uses the same instruction set as amd64.

So yes, download and use the amd64 iso to install your distro.

OK, got it. Thanks.

Edit: It's now happily running Kubuntu, BUT I had to install this bootloader http://refit.sourceforge.net/ to autoboot into Linux and manually install the broadcom wifi module which was a pain in the ass. If anyone wants to install Linux on a Intel Mac, better get that module first on a USB stick or end up having no internets.
